Summary
Highschool volleyball player Ren Kurusu is expelled from Yasogami high, abandoned by her friends, and isolated by the community. On top of that she spends six months in juvenile detention and is sent to the unfamiliar city of Tokyo on a year of probation. Her hope for a second chance and a fresh start is shattered when she finds out just how abusive her new coach is during early practice on her first day. At least nobody knows about her record.
Shiho Suzui is halfway to the grave, and she'd make it there either of her own volition or by the hand of Suguru Kamoshida. At this point she was just hoping for it to come quickly. But when she's the only one who sees how her new teammate, Ren Kurusu, is intentionally isolated from the rest of the team it makes her blood boil. She bonds with the girl over their shared situation and when the opportunity arises to make her tormentor pay for what he's done to her and what he's doing to Ren, she takes it without hesitation. She joins her old friends from middle school on their trips to an alternate world, and eventually comes to be the leader of the newly created Phantom Thieves.
