Shinsuke laughs lightly in amusement. “I can never see Osamu in that way.”
The face in the mirror softens as Shinsuke resumes his combing. After a moment, with a sheepish tone in his voice, Atsumu asks, “What about me?”
The comb stops in midair once again and Shinsuke couldn’t help but stare at the face in the mirror, which was gradually growing red. He opens his mouth to answer, but nothing comes out because he genuinely doesn’t know what to say.
“N-never mind, Kita-san. Sorry. That was weird of me to ask—"
But Shinsuke, no matter how shaken he is, is not one to leave what he started unfinished. “If... I had to choose between you, Osamu, or Suna… I would choose you.”
The shade of red deepens, and Shinsuke suddenly thinks it is all worth it.

He doesn't get how you can look at someone and be like 'this is the one'. What makes that person so special out of a crowd of them? What makes you notice them and think 'I want to spend the rest of my life with you'. It crushes him from the inside, how everyone can do that and gets it but him.
Until Ojiro came along and finally Shinsuke had an explanation.

It's amazing Kita thought, how you could spend most of your adolescences with the same people and just like that it’s over. You grow up, you move on, you start living different lives. It’s not as if you're strangers, but the bond you had is not the same. Well Kita didn’t necessarily like that thought, and he tried to keep his close knit bonds as much as he could.
Or a fic in which Kita misses Inarizaki and it turns out they miss him too! :)
