In the interim of trials 1 and 2, Amane goes to visit Fuuta as usual but arrives at the tail end of Kotoko's attack.
Now Fuuta is on the verge of death, Amane has lost function in her right eye, and Mahiru is physically unscathed but wracked with survivor's guilt.

“No way,” Fuuta shuts down the idea immediately. “We can handle this ourselves. And if it really does go to shit we can call them then. We’re fine.” Truth be told, he simply didn’t need the other two to know that they were doing this out of petty revenge more than anything. Mahiru may not laugh at him, but Mikoto definitely would. Him and his team of four can take on a single enemy on their own- they aren’t newbies anymore. How much trouble could the Dark Lord on his own be, anyway?

The night was silent other than the cries coming from Prisoner 009’s cell. Nobody went to investigate anymore. It was always assumed to be a pissed off John throwing things around or a scared and stressed Mikoto with confusion just building up more and more. It became a normal activity and people learned to sleep through it.
Prisoner 003 - resident insomniac and Kayano Mikoto's boyfriend - heard the cries. He was used to the regular crying and sobbing. He had been told to just let him be during it. As much as it hurt Fuuta to stay in his cell rather than go and comfort Mikoto, he wanted to respect his wishes.
This was a new sound.
The guy who only reads fluff wanted to experiment with his writing!!!
