Summary
Pat was happy, considering the circumstances (i.e. the divorce). His new job at Button House was more fulfilling than the bank had ever been and the other tenants of the manor had been very welcoming. They were all quickly becoming friends.
Except for the grumpy groundsman who would not talk to any of them and never came to Pizza Night.
Who in their right mind didn't like pizza? Well, the Captain apparently.
-------------------------------------------------
Life at Button House was never quite boring.
Well. It did feel very boring most days. But one of Humphrey's housemates always managed to liven things up. By coming up with more and more ridiculous ideas for pizza toppings during Pizza Night for example. Or by making Humphrey think that they might commit mass murder with their shotgun soon.
No, life at Button House was never entirely boring. -

Summary
“Favour? What are you talking about?” Thomas scoffed dismissively “I don’t owe you anything, Robin!”
“Do too! Remember? 1825?”
Thomas did remember. He remembered every day, in fact, because part of him wondered if Robin would keep his word or had even remembered himself. His disgusted facade was made of stone, though, for the Poet’s self-respect would never let him admit the suspense for the last two-hundred years had been exhaustingly titillating.
Or: Robin never forgets what he’s owed, not even bets from long ago.

Summary
“Oh, so it’s like a test,” Alison concluded.
“Something like that,” Julian agreed, though in his mind it was more along the lines of ‘bringing a boy home to meet the parents’. It wasn’t his fault that everyone else on this bridge was totally oblivious.
“That explains why Captain has been so nervous while they’re down there,” Thomas observed. “I don’t see why, though. Havers is very professional, I’m sure Fanny will find him acceptable.”
Julian side-eyed the Trill helmsman. There was nothing professional about the way Havers and the Captain blatantly flirted on the bridge, and he was sure their logical, over-protective Vulcan officer would not find their displays of emotion ‘acceptable’. Whatever. Not his problem.
“Yeah, and Kitty’s down there to solve any possible disputes,” Alison chimed in. She was a decent science officer, but a bit green. Still fresh out of the Academy, prone to rookie mistakes. She made another one just then, when she turned around to face them with a smug grin on her face. “What could possibly go wrong?”

Summary
“What did that pillock do this time?” Julian asks, eyes darting past you to the open doorway behind you.
“Julian! You cannot go around calling him such unsightly names.” Thomas turns to you as though looking for backup. This time, though, you can’t bring yourself to defend Pat.
“How’s that saying go? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times—”
“And you’re probably really, really hot?”
“Julian!”
After your little punishment with Julian and Thomas, you and Pat finally have the time to catch up and talk things through. Or, well, you would, if Pat would only make the time for you as he promised…

Summary
Professor James Higgins encompassed all the traits that a good entomologist should have: studiousness, dedication, a love of insects (particularly of the order Lepidoptera), and a strong belief in logic and the scientific method.
Therefore, whenever some first year inevitably raised their hand during syllabus week to ask if the science building was really haunted, he responded with a very firm and definite ‘no’.
Some of his colleagues, however, did not share his skepticism.
“There be a ghost moving abouts the east wing today,” Mary greeted him.
“Hello to you too, Miss Guppy.”
“An’ the vendin’ machines all outta the good biscuits.”
“Damn and blast!”

Summary
James is dead, and the man he loved is to be forever out of his reach, and he's trying to come to terms with his sexuality while trapped in a haunted house with multiple ridiculous men. He finds himself thinking improper thoughts about all of them from time to time, and he loathes himself for it. But his attention is grabbed more and more by the two most over-sexed, morally grey men of the group - who have an odd, close, sometimes unhealthy relationship, and both of whom (as he sometimes sees with his own horrified, thrilled eyes) are not wearing any pants. He finds himself getting drawn as a voyeuristic third party more and more into the orbit of their relationship.

Summary
“Rachel?” Julian’s voice was croaky. “You should be in bed,” he didn’t move.
“Yes,” Rachel already knew her father wouldn’t make her go to sleep, so she scrambled onto the armchair. No use leaving now he knew she was there.
Rachel noticed the chessboard sitting between them, and her eyes lit up. She had no idea how to play but had watched her father and his friends play before, so it couldn’t be that hard. She could figure it out.
She began putting all the pieces into place while her father looked, saying nothing.
“Your move,” she said once she was done. -
