Summary
When Jonathan Drouin enters Team Canada’s Combine, it’s not just a spot on the roster he’s fighting for - it’s clarity amidst the chaos. His complicated feelings for Nathan MacKinnon, his best friend and dynamic-compatible partner, hover over every glance and touch, the tension between them a constant undercurrent that keeps Jo perpetually off-balance.
And then there’s Sidney Crosby, Team Canada’s captain - a living legend whose presence sends Jo’s world into a deeper spiral. Sidney’s arrival into their lives shifts the fragile equilibrium between Jo and Nate, adding another layer to the simmering confusion that Jo struggles to keep buried.
Each drill becomes a test of more than skill; every moment shared on the ice feels like a quiet battle of emotions, a push-and-pull Jo doesn’t know how to win. As the pressure to prove himself mounts, Jo’s questions grow heavier. Who is he, beyond the competition? And what will happen when the line between friendship and something more becomes impossible for him to ignore?

Summary
If you asked Jo, being on a team with Nate again felt like he was taking a shot of straight caffeine every time they were on the ice together. It wasn't as simple as that off the ice though, what with Jo being here as Nate's rut partner and the friendship they were trying to maintain.

Summary
Jo paces around the kitchen, watched closely by his dog. He’s muttering under his breath every so often, and Mallow seems vaguely interested. Mallow is still laying down, of course, always lazy, but his head is perked up as if curious whether Jo’s mood is one that will lead to a trip to the dog park. Mallow loves the dog park. Jo notices Mallow’s gaze and sighs, shaking his head.
“Not today, buddy,” he says softly. Mallow whines, making Jo even more disappointed in himself - he can’t even make his own dog happy. “The thing is,” he says aloud, sort of directed at Mallow but mostly directed toward himself, “there’s other things in Colorado, you know? Denver is a big city. Well, it’s a city, I don’t think it’s that big. Anyway, there’s more to it than just Nate.”
Mallow cocks his head at Jo. Jo didn’t say the word ‘park’ or anything close to it, which is the only word Mallow really cares about aside from ‘treat’ and ‘walk’.

Summary
During the season, days of the week don’t matter. There aren’t weekdays and weekends, and there’s no point in complaining about Mondays. There are game days and non-game days. That’s it. Some might count travel days as a separate category, but honestly, when they’re on the road, travel and game days frequently happen together. The only distinction that has ever mattered to Nate is whether he’s going to be playing a real game or just practicing and working out.
He’s learned that, over the summer, he needs to keep track of real days to some extent. He can’t call his sister to see if she wants to have lunch on a Thursday, because she’ll just remind him that she has a full-time job. He can’t show up at his favorite restaurant on a Monday, because it’s closed on Mondays. He can’t call Jo on Friday, because he called Jo on Wednesday, and he promised himself he would put at least three days between calls.

Summary
“What the fuck is that?”
It’s not the response Jo had been hoping for.
Though, to be fair, Nate’s very negative vocal assessment - and even more negative facial expression - are a mirror of Jo’s own feelings on the matter.
If Jo was forced to describe what they were both looking at, he would do so. But he would rather not.
Because the only way to really accurately describe it was, a yellow-brown wiggly blob.

Summary
Nate grabs the mail on the way up to his condo, rifling through it to see if anything interesting is there. A couple of bills, a lot of junk, and a wedding invitation. Cale had mentioned these were going out soon, so Nate’s not surprised to see it. What is surprising, though, is the way it’s addressed; curling script along the front has Nate’s address fully correct, of course, but the name on it is unexpected. Or, rather, the names. Mr. Nathan MacKinnon and Mr. Jonathan Drouin.

“Um,” she says. “I think you misunderstood this question,” she says, pointing toward the page.
Nate reads it quickly, confused. “Home away from home,” he says. “Why wouldn’t I put Denver?”
“Denver IS your home,” she says.
“No, Nova Scotia’s my home,” Nate argues.
Katie sighs. “I don’t know how that’ll go over with the fans. Can you change it to something else?”
“No,” Nate says stubbornly, digging in his heels even though it’s something he doesn’t actually care about. “It’s not like I said anything bad.”

"Jo turns his head so he can nose at Nate’s wrist, breathing in his perfect sea salt-new hockey gear-woodsy scent for a second before he says, 'I’m okay. I promise.'
He pulls away from Nate’s wrist to look up at his face. Nate’s smile is teasing, dangerous, when he says, 'Well, why don’t you prove it to me?'”Jo gets a hat trick and goes through concussion protocol. When he gets home, Nate's mostly interested in the second part.

Summary
The quiet is deafening as they file off the ice. Nate can’t concentrate on anything - he knows he’s supposed to lift his stick up to thank the fans cheering for them despite their failed season, but he can barely manage to stay on the ice for the extra minute. He throws his stick on the bench as hard as he can before stomping down the tunnel. It’s not exactly captain behavior, but there’s a reason he’s not the captain.
He gets to the locker room, slams his helmet in his stall, drops his gloves to the ground, and sits. He buries his head in his hands, knowing he won’t be able to stop the flow of tears. Nate takes a few deep breaths, trying to hold himself together. He’s exhausted from playing a game and a half, angry at himself for not covering Duchene and allowing him to score, pissed that his season - the season that broke records - is over without a win at the end of it, and heartbroken that he couldn’t be better for some of the other guys on the team.

Summary
Jo glances down at the caller and is shocked to see Nate’s name. He and Nate haven’t spoken in years aside from the occasional text. They definitely hadn’t spoken on the phone in a long time, not since their first year apart, Nate blowing up the NHL and Jo stuck back in Halifax.
“Hello?” Jo says tentatively.
“Hey,” Nate says easily. “It’s Nate.”
“Hi,” Jo replies. They both fall into awkward silence.
“How are you doing?” Nate finally asks. “Summer going ok?”
“It’s fine,” Jo says. “Long offseason, you know how it goes. How - uh, how are you?”
“Really good,” Nate says, and Jo can hear the smile on his face. “Actually, I’m in Ibiza right now with some of the guys. Chilling on the beach, sleeping in, super relaxing.”
