“Is this it?” Tommy asks incredulously.
“Looks like.” Joel turns to scan the concrete walls and watchtowers, all appear unmanned.
“There’s no one here.”
“As far as we can tell,” Tess says, cautiously moving to the gate door, her rifle pulled forward at the ready. “The guy we met on the road said he traded with people here just a week ago. A whole QZ can’t have been cleared out that quickly.”
“Could’ve if there was an uprisin’ or a horde somehow got in.” Tommy squats to look at a suitcase lying on the ground. It’s still zipped, outside a little worse for wear but otherwise untouched.
“There’d be infected around if it was a horde, and if it was an uprisin,’ I think we’d see more damage.” Joel pulls his pistol out, looking around nervously. “Too fuckin’ quiet.”
IE: In the early days, Tess, Joel, and Tommy come across a mystery.

Summary
The gun feels heavy in her hands, her skin tight on her body, and she doesn't feel like she's a part of the world around her anymore. She walks down the road, her feet carrying her further and further from everything she’s ever known.
She can hear screaming around her, explosions, and other noises that she’s only ever heard in her nightmares, but she just keeps walking.
Sometimes, she hides in fields or behind trees, houses, and cars, anywhere she can, so the things don’t see her. The things that were once people but aren’t anymore. She walks, and she hides, and she sleeps. She vaguely recalls eating food of some kind and drinking water from sinks that still run, but if you asked her when, she wouldn’t be able to tell you.
It takes nearly a month, but she finally reaches Nashville and stops.
IE: The first days of Tess after the Outbreak.

“Oh, we don’t do that anymore,” Tess answered with a sincerity that actually threw Tommy for a second. Then Joel started to laugh.
“Oh, go fuck yourself,” Tommy muttered around his grin.
He felt twenty years younger in the company of these two.

“Hey there, buttercup.” Tess quips, and Tommy chuffs a weak laugh. “It’s almost breakfast time. I was thinking maybe we’d go to that Ihop that we saw coming into town. I heard the apple caramel waffles are divine.”
“Na, I was thinkin’ of some biscuits and gravy for me, maybe some coffee too,” Tommy said. He let his head rest in her lap, and she kept threading her fingers through his hair. He has to close his eyes tight for a moment and breathe because it reminds him so much of when he was little and he had a bad dream. His mama would come in the room, put his head in her lap just like this, and sing him Spanish lullabies while carding his hair with her fingers. He sniffs, and Tess soothes him by bending down to place a light kiss on the side of his head.
“It’s gonna be okay, Tommy,” Her voice is so sure, and Tommy wants so badly to believe her.
IE: In the early days after the Outbreak, Tommy and Tess go on a run with another member of their group on the way up to Boston, and Tommy has a bad time.

It was absurd optimism, a ridiculous fight: don’t fucking die. But it was the biggest Fuck You she could muster against reality. She was not going to give in, no matter how bad it got. She’d seen people take the easy, quiet way out with their pills or bullets. She got it. She even envied them a little. That kind of quick death would never belong to her. She was too full of fight, too angry at the world.
“We’ll go as far as we have to,” Joel murmured.

“Joel…” She keens his name, and he can feel the world drop out from underneath him.
“Show me,” He begs, his voice cracking with the strain, praying he’s wrong, that it really is just a break. But when she pulls up her sleeve to show him the bite, he can’t control the “No, No, No” that just keeps echoing from his lips.
IE: After getting separated from Tess, Tommy, and Riley during an easy job because of an Angry Mob, Ellie gets bit, and Joel has to deal with failing again.
(AU where Ellie and Riley never get bit in the mall. Joel finds them at 10 and 12, and they become part of his smuggling crew with Him, Tess, and Tommy. It's now four years later.)

“I had an idea,” she tells him, voice a little breathy as she continues to ride him, one hand planted on his lower abdomen to keep steady, the other cupping her breast. Joel’s eyes scan her, lingering where they’re joined, before returning to her face.
“Dangerous thing, Tessa,” he taunts, and Tess clenches around him, getting a huffed groan out of Joel as she keeps her steady rocking. Joel’s grip on her hip tightens, guiding her, and Tess swallows a moan, low in her throat. “Gonna tell me?”
Tess fucks down onto him harder, taking him deeper, and Joel lets out a soft growl.
“I think I should fuck Tommy,” she says, and Joel’s face freezes, staring up at her as she keeps the rhythm of her hips. She continues, growing tighter around him, and Joel’s hands squeeze around her hips until they grind them to a stop, glowering up at her.
