Summary
Back then, everyone had a pipe dream. John swore his band would make it big someday, but Paul never believed that, and so his dream was just to become a teacher. Ritchie only ever wanted to open a record shop, and George wanted nothing but domestic bliss.
Well, that’s all they were: pipe dreams.
The Beatles never made it big, though John became something of a rock and roll darling until-like all good celebrities-he was shot by a deranged fan. Paul ultimately did become a teacher, but burned bridges with John in the wreckage of the band. George eventually settled down with Ritchie and, in spite of everything, had four children.
Oh, and Ritchie? He opened his record shop after all, only to spend all of its profits on booze and throw all real responsibility at John’s son.
But once, not long ago, Ritchie did the impossible and sobered up. He managed for five years, and for once, he was happy.
Now Ritchie is falling apart again, George is miserable, Paul has given up on them both, and to the surprise of everyone, John is back in Liverpool, whittling away the late eighties as a reclusive househusband.
But they say, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
Whether that’s true, time will tell.

Summary
Just to set the record straight, George Starkey was never looking forward to 2020. It was hard to look forward to anything, he thought, trying to make ends meet for an alcoholic and much-in-debt husband, a hotheaded burglar son, a bemused and funeral-clad daughter, and an eight year-old learning that his family stood in stark and rather grim contrast to those of his friends'.
Of course, the pandemic didn't help anything—once that had hit, George had simply braced himself for Ritchie's record shop to close and prepared to lose his mind in those walls.
But oddly enough, quarantine would prove itself to be a motivating force for good among the Starkeys.
After a whole lot of mind-losing, that is.(The threequel to "Digging a Hole and Drinking Wine" and "And Why Not You?")

Summary
At all of nineteen years old, and with nothing to his name but a burglary charge and a festering addiction to adderall, Jason Starkey's pessimism makes Julian Lennon look like Winston Freaking Churchill in the midst of the Second World War.
But it isn't like he's got no reason for it--without a degree, any skills, or if we're being honest, a single brain cell to spare, the kid can't do much else but laze around his house trying avoid his two fathers: the alcoholic Ritchie and the incompetent George.
Still, every dark cloud has a silver lining, every dark room has a silver screen, and if he doesn't blink, Jason just might catch them both.(The sequel to “Digging a Hole and Drinking Wine”)
