Summary
Dreams had meanings, he thought as he took a sip of the water. Dreams revealed things that could have slipped beneath his consciousness. He liked Mitsumi. He really did like her, and there was no doubt about it. But what like would it be categorized as? Was it the same level that Mitsumi’s like for him was, or was it greater or more?
It all made his head hurt.
He heard Fumi's voice in his head again, “Do you like Mitsumi-chan?”
He was quiet for a second, “Do I?” He whispered to no one in particular. His legs wobbled at the thought and he leaned on the counter for support, cup still in hand.
After the vacation at Mitsumi's, Sousuke becomes sick. But in that delirious state, he discovers something more.

When Mitsumi asks, being in love is supposed to be like this:
Fumi says she feels butterflies. Always thinking about them, making up excuses to see them.
Egashira says it's having someone who is what you aren't.
Nao says you can see a future with them. Someone you can share a life with, who can accept you as you are, completely.
Mitsumi doesn't think she feels any of that, exactly. If she makes a quiz out of it, she thinks she'd fail—her answers would have been I'm not sure or yes, but.
…But something changes between Mitsumi and Shima, after summer.

“Murashige-san! You left so quickly I thought you were gone for the day, I’m glad I caught you. We—um.” He looks up at Sousuke, seeming to notice him for the first time, his mouth falling open before he quickly turns away. “Sorry, am I—”
Sousuke opens his mouth to reassure the boy that he’s not interrupting anything, but Murashige beats him to it: “You actually kind of are, but what is it? Did you need something?”
She smiles, too, and it’s not a mean look, but her tone is a bit short. If Sousuke heard that from somebody he’d probably assume they were upset at him… but Murashige’s posture betrays more than frustration; her shoulders are tensed, and she’s tugging at one of her sleeves so that the fabric is taut. The smile isn’t touching her eyes, either.
Maybe Sousuke is reading too much into it, but he shifts to stand closer to Murashige regardless. Just a fraction, even as he shoots Murashige’s classmate a disarming smile. He’s not upset, just cautious. Hopefully that’s understandable.

Sousuke opens his mouth, then closes it. What can he really say to that?
“Sorry to bother you,” he mumbles, getting to his feet. “I just thought that…if there was something you wanted to talk about, I could—never mind. Get some rest soon, Mitsumi-chan.”
Stupid, he chides himself mentally, reaching for the door. You just made things worse.
