Fang Runin is a a 21 year old war-orphan who'd never been able to escape the grasp of her stepmother. In this world, Yin Vaisra had decisively conquered the Nikan Empire years before the events of the novels, establishing a monarchy with him at the helm. After Emperor Vaisra prevented women from attending Sinegard, Rin was left with no choice but to look for another way to escape arranged marriage at the age of 14.
Finding her savior in Tutor Feyrik, she'd been able to make a name for herself as a fighter and to keep her stepmother happy (and rich) enough to keep Rin around.
But everything is about to change as Emperor Vaisra announces The Selection for his now heir to the throne, Yin Nezha. An opportunity for women to compete for the prince's hand from across the empire, but Rin vehemently opposes the whole idea.

"Our season" is supposed to be a dating show where some of the most eligible alphas of the capital try to find their perfect match. Hao does not really believe in the success of these kind of shows but he loves the drama, and he cannot wait to watch desperate omegas running after the hottest alphas of the country.
Hao is about to focus back on cutting the melon when he lays his eyes on the last alpha presented by the lady on the tv. He recognizes the tattoo immediately. His eyes move up to the alpha's face. It had been five years but he would never forget this face: There he was...his alpha.
