Taylor is horrified to find out that Hermie hadn't told them it was his birthday, even more so when Normal had known and didn't tell them either. So he gathers the others that are willing to surprise Hermie.
Hermie doesn't really celebrate his birthday, he never has because no one was ever there to celebrate it with him. But he supposes that changes this year. This year he gets presents and a cake. And best yet, friends to celebrate with even if he would never say it.

She followed where his finger was pointing just as the mascot paraded past the classroom’s open doorway. “Teeny?”
“Yeah,” he said. When she didn’t say anything else, he prodded, “So who is it? Underneath.”
“Underneath?” She looked alarmed. “How should I know?”
