    Summary

Those who have forsaken their own humanity shall pay the price. All who are punished are deserving of so. But what of those who enact the punishing? Are they all that righteous themselves? What if one’s desire to protect ends the life of another? What if the one who benefits from it all knows not the treachery he’s caused? Just how can a centuries long grudge be resolved in a peaceful manner? It can’t.

    Summary

Moxiang Tongxiu paints a world for us where the Heavens are a bunch of bureaucrats, most gods don't care about humans, and after death, you face reincarnation with the complete loss of identity if your soul doesn't dispersed. There's no higher meaning, no purpose, no justice, no-thing. There's no hope that any story will eventually end well.

The author takes ideal after ideal — kindness, friendship, love — to demonstrate with sadistic pleasure how each of them can shatter and cut your hands with shards. The darkest thing in the book is, of course, not the epidemics and torture in themselves, but this picture of a hopeless world where there is no light. (It resembles ours.)

But the book also shows that even in such world, you can still believe in something. And maybe one day it will make you happy, or maybe you'll ruin your life for no benefit, like Xiao Ying. It depends on how the dice fall.

Taking a closer look at what connects Hua Cheng and Shi Wudu, how TGCF blends 50% cynicism and 50% idealism — and why choice can be the central theme in the novel with the same chance as time.

    Summary

“Did you just call me to mock his honor like those pathetic gods who fell to my saber? Do I need to teach you a lesson on respect?” He roared.
“Do I need to teach you how to listen?” He Xuan screamed back. “I’m telling you my day was ruined because he just assaulted me!”
“You–what are you babbling about?” Hua Cheng said but there was an excited tilt to his voice now.
“Your precious god knocked me out, paralyzed me and dumped me outside of the city just as I was approaching Shi Qingxuan! He scolded me like a god damn mother hen! You better be lucky I couldn’t move because I would’ve pulled his tongue out.”

    ***

He Xuan is enjoying his evening out stalking the Shi brothers but his good time is swiftly ruined when he runs into a forgotten god that disapproves of his obsessive behavior.
