Before she could think of an explanation, the other Goomba cut her off. "I know what's going on here! You're faking it! You two aren't really dating!" He accused.
She jumped back in surprise and a little panic, thinking her cover was blown. "N-No! We are! We're just the happiest couple around!" She insisted, and Mario nodded along in support.
"Then prove it! Kiss!" Goom Goom demanded.

As Mario rode the boat to Rougeport, that email from Goombella ran through his head over and over again.
"And... There is one thing that kind of weighed on me and I never got to express to you. See, I... Well... Maybe that's best kept a secret."
He wasn't dumb. Maybe reckless at times, but not dumb.
The implications of that email were clear. And it's not like they were talking in person, and she chickened out. She TYPED that out.
If she had decided against confessing altogether, she could've erased that entire part of the email and left no trace. But she didn't. She left those clues for Mario, almost teasing him with that last sentence.
