Kaito’s lip twitches into a somewhat crooked smile. “Polaris. That’s the Northern Star.”
“Yes. And… In summer, the triangle.”
“You’re not far off on that one! Just call it the summer triangle.” Kaito nudges Gonta again with a grin, and it’s hard not to smile back. “That’s what they celebrate at tanabata. I’ll take ya sometime, even if you’ve been. It’d be different now, yeah?”
Yes, in a lot of ways, many of which make Gonta’s skin sort of crawl at the thought of going to a festival—but attending with Kaito would be nice. Gonta allows himself to enjoy the notion for a moment, not the notion of attending as a famous reality TV show star or a known killer, but rather a teenage boy with a friend, someone for whom backstory and memory aren’t complicated, for whom the biggest things he has to worry about are grades, or perhaps what he’s going to do when he gets older.

Summary
This strategy works pretty well, more or less. Gonta still gets stopped at times, but people lose their nerve to talk to you if you look like you have somewhere important to be going. Gonta still keeps his head lowered and his hands in his pockets, trusting that his natural glower will dissuade people from interacting. (Not that he likes relying on being scary—beyond what he’d had to do in the wild to survive, it always makes him feel guilty—but it’s that or be forced to talk about the game, about Miu, and Gonta just couldn’t stand doing that.)
He’s half a block away from the coffee shop (and safety) when he hears someone call out to him from behind. Exhaling, Gonta wonders if he should pretend not to have heard and keep going, but when they call his name again, he freezes, straightening up abruptly.
Gonta recognises that voice. He hasn’t heard it in six months, but Kaito’s rough, tenor voice is too distinctive to forget.

The trial comes to an end, and Shuichi is faced with a horrible truth: Gonta is the culprit. Torn between betraying Kaito to condemn Gonta, and betraying Gonta to save everyone else, he grasps at straws. It's the only way to save him.
Shuichi convinces Monokuma to let Gonta live.

“Yes!” Gonta says, perhaps too quickly. He gives a shake of his head and takes another breath, which this time thankfully helps his shoulders ease a little bit more. Kaito raises an eyebrow, and Gonta continues, “Gonta is just… nervous. He knows…”
Well. With the beanie and the jacket, Kaito could almost be an entirely different person, is all. Sure, he isn’t wearing a mask, which means that getting up close would quickly reveal his identity—but that’s only if you get close enough. Gonta has far too much hair to tuck into any hats and he’s far too large to hide beneath a jacket. He lumbers alongside Kaito like a big green arrow pointing at his head. Kaito had been insistent that Gonta come with him, that neither of them step outside the rehab centre without one another—but Gonta can’t help feeling just a little exposed, like this.
Kaito smiles in that same tired way as before, moving his hand to Gonta’s shoulder instead and squeezing.

Gonta leans into the table he’s been pacing in front of, and Kaito tilts his head, lilac eyes expectant but somehow patient at the same time. Gonta appreciates it. Kaito’s always been patient with him.
“It’s just that…” Gonta trails off. “It is as Gonta said before… he’s been so useless to everybody lately! Angie-san died because Gonta wasn’t there for her… Chabashira-san died while Gonta was aware of a killer! If Gonta calls himself a friend, but then sits around and allows people to be hurt… what kind of friend does that make him?”
Kaito purses his lips. He moves towards the table Gonta is leaning on, flattening his palms against the surface of it and pushing up to sit on the edge. Kaito’s legs are long, but the table is just tall enough for his feet to swing a little, the backs of his slippers skimming against the ground.
“You’re really still holdin’ yourself accountable for all of that, Gonta?” Kaito asks softly.

Gonta stays up late to keep a watch on things, trapped by his feelings of uselessness after the third trial. Kaito finds him and tries to help him through it.

Gonta takes a big, obvious breath. Then bows low, pulling his hands from behind his back, and suddenly Kaito’s staring at a bouquet full of red roses.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Momota-kun! Please accept Gonta’s confession!”
Oh, god.
Kaito feels colour rising to his cheeks, suddenly much more lightheaded than he’d been facing Kirumi or Miu. He braces himself with a hand on his desk while the other trembles, fingers extended as though to accept the roses, in front of him. Gonta is impressive as always, able to hold a bowing position without even twitching. The opposite of how Kaito feels, really, because he’s pretty sure his knees are about to give out from under him.
“It’s Valentine’s Day?” Kaito is eventually able to choke out.
