Summary
Thirty years ago, Stan agreed to take Journal 1 somewhere far away by Ford’s desperate request, only to perish at sea. Upon his death, a mysterious power seals his soul within the journal he failed to protect. For many years afterward, the journal continues to drift through the ocean, alone and forgotten by all.
In 2012, Mabel Pines is feeling lost without her twin brother, who’s accepted an internship at the prestigious Institute of Oddology, run by the famous Stanford Pines. Just when she thinks she’s gonna have to survive public middle school alone, a chance encounter at the pier changes everything.
Meanwhile, Dipper is beyond ecstatic to follow in his great uncle’s footsteps as a paranormal researcher. While he has reservations about leaving Mabel in Piedmont, he can't pass up this educational opportunity. But he’ll soon discover that not everything is as it seems within the Institute and the town of Gravity Falls.

Summary
Years ago, Stan Pines died under strange circumstances. His body was found, funerals happened, Pa was too ashamed to show up, Shermie too busy, Ma went... so did Ford...
And Ford learned a lot while at the funerals, more than he would have liked to. Like the fact his brother lived out of his car, of all places... At least, the car gave him a way to summon his brother's spirit, to talk one last time! Or it should have. It never worked... Ford kept the car anyways, for old times' sake.
In other news, a little over 30 years later, 13 year old Mabel Pines came back to Gravity Falls a year after her brother stayed back there for an "apprenticeship" with their great uncle Ford or whatever... Meaning she was alone to face their parents' divorce. And even now, her brother ignored her for his "anomalies". No big deal. None at all... Not at all the reason why she tried to leave the home at 1 am, only to be met with a homeless-looking ghost with no memories who decided to haunt her.
At least the nameless ghost is a good friend to prank Gravity Falls with!
(Inspired by multiple ghost related media: (Molly McGee and The Ghost, Mystery Skulls) but mostly by Beetlejuice, the Musical)

Summary
Stan couldn't explain it if he tried. All he knew was that one minute he was alive– heart beating, blood pumping, the whole shebang– and the next he was dead– No pulse, see-through, lying in the middle of a forest clearing. He couldn't remember much, but he was pretty sure he'd been in New Mexico last he'd checked. To make things even stranger, there was a sort of tug in his chest like something was trying to guide him somewhere...

Meanwhile, Ford tries sending a postcard to his brother, who he hasn't seen in 10 years, but it doesn't work out. How will he contact Stan now? He has no idea, but he'll need to figure something out before it's too late.

There are a select few details that remain generally consistent across iterations. One of the more intriguing examples: June fifteenth, the day the twins were born.

Summary
“I’m not coming home because there’s nothing to come home for!” Ford yelled. “He’s just run off to another country or pissed someone off and is laying low, or something. We’ll hear from him in a few weeks and then you’ll all be pissed that you panicked for nothing.”
“Ford, please . . .”
“I’m not coming.”

Summary
“You need to wake up now,” Stan says softly. “This isn’t real.”
“I know, but I can’t,” Richie sobs. “I don’t want to be here.” Not again. Never again. It is dead, why is It still haunting him?
Stan fixes him with one of those looks of his, the one where he can see his every thought as if it were written on his face. “That’s not true, Trashmouth.”

Alternatively: We all know Richie gets caught in the Deadlights, but do we really know what happens after?

Summary
Dipper and Mabel have been sent of to their Great Uncle Ford's house for part of the summer. Unfortunately for Mabel, her Great Uncle is a very paranoid man, so her hopes of making new friends in Gravity Falls is looking rather unlikely. However, if she can't make friends outside the house, she'll have to make do with making friends inside the house. Thankfully there's a friendly- but oddly familiar- ghost living there!
(An AU in which Stan died before returning to Gravity Falls, so Ford was never pushed into the portal. Tags to be added.) -
