“The Five Lakes’ air, water, and fire,” Zhou Zishu recited, twisting a tongue of flame around his fingertips. “Surround the world and smother the pyre.”
“The Avatar’s ashes are scattered. The bridge to heaven is shattered,” Wen Kexing continued, a tiny tentacle of water around his fingers mirroring Zhou Zishu’s idle firebending. “What is left for Mt. Qingya to admire?”
Gu Xiang looked as incredulous as Zhou Zishu felt. “They wiped out a whole tribe just for a stupid nursery rhyme?”
“They wiped out a tribe because some idiots think the Avatar cycle didn’t end,” Zhou Zishu drawled. “Even though Rong Xuan’s eyes were glowing when he slit his own throat.”
Despite losing his blue fire and his lightning to the Seven Nails, Zhou Zishu was enjoying his freedom from the Firelord. He fully intended to wash his hands of the Five Lakes Alliance once he delivered Chengling and his pet saber-tooth moose-lion safely to his uncle in Omashu.
But fire and water have no mercy – and after statues around the world lit up the same night Ghost Valley wiped out the Mirror Lake Tribe, neither does anyone else.
