Summary
When two powerful wizards meet on a battlefield, the result is death on a scale scarcely believable to those who didn't witness it. Caleb is one of these powerful wizards, a bringer of chaos and death wherever he goes. He is the protege of Trent Ikithon and the youngest Archmage of the Cerberus Assembly, as cruel as he is smart and universally feared.
Essek Thelyss is the other half of this coin,a traitor, the Shadowhand of the Bright Queen, and friend of the Lords of Msirule -- a group of adventurers turned assassins by Her Majesty after returning a missing Beacon.
The war between their two nations had finally come to an end, on the condition that the two marry each other, but Caleb is haunted by his actions and Essek must run from his. All the While, Trent Ikithon is gaining power.

"If the only risk were to myself I would do it in a moment. But to risk all that we have done, risk the next child or twenty or a hundred who will not have to endure what I endured…
“I am rambling, though; and look, breakfast is ready.”
~~~~
Caleb knew he would not be free of the temptation to change his past as long as the means to attempt it remained intact. But its destruction brings a new threat, one that risks the very future he hopes to build.
Summary
“Cay-leb!”
The tiefling’s voice is high-pitched, sing-song, and it’s all the warning Bren gets before he finds an arm slung over his shoulder and half a face full of curly blue hair. Weeks of traveling on the road with this… this band of misfits has made him less likely to kill them for catching him off-guard; they are loud, and obnoxious, and chaotic, and tactile. Strangely, it isn’t enough to make him regret going undercover.
Of course, nothing could make him regret that. He serves the good of the Empire, full stop.
