Summary
Evan Buckley was fourteen when he got his heart broken for the first time. He’d been in love with a girl from algebra, despite the fact that he’d never been any good at math. She sat one row in front of him, and when she leaned back in her chair, he could smell her strawberry shampoo.
She must have liked him too because by the end of September they were stealing shy, awkward kisses under the bleachers.
When he finally mustered the courage to ask her to Homecoming, he was convinced that it would be their moment.
Instead, she looked at him with a hesitant expression.
“Listen, Evan, you’re a lot of fun,” she said gently. “But I want something serious.”
“Me too,” he replied earnestly. He could already imagine it: her in a dress, his hand nervously placed on the small of her back, the music, the lights—
“I meant with someone else,” she interrupted. Her eyes softened, not unkind, and perhaps that was the worst part.

Summary
Buck surprises him, he blinks slowly, once, then a second and a third time – I love you. – it’s simple, three words, three blinks. I love you. And then again. I am here.
And if Eddie had any doubts, they’re gone now.
Buck’s eyes are clear and intense, and Eddie can feel the love in that simple movement, in that simple gesture.
He wants to say it back, he needs to say it, but the words get stuck in his throat, choked back by the lump of emotions that is slowly suffocating him, because Eddie loves and then loses, it’s a pattern.Buck is in the hospital. Again.

Summary
Texas isn't what Christopher hoped it to be. He soon realized that some people are better when they're just a phone call or a quick visit away. It took an embarrassing amount of time for him to realize he'd never be able to settle there.
But instead of calling his dad, who he still hasn't fully forgiven, he tries his luck with Buck, who without a second thought, flies out to pick up his best friends son.
Which would be a great surprise for Eddie-in theory.
Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse and Buck and Christopher's lives are left hanging in the balance. Eddie's worst fears come alive in real-time, forcing him to confront the distance that's grown between himself and his son, the unspoken words between him and Buck, and the crushing weight of utter powerlessness and guilt.
And somehow, Brad Torrence is involved.

“Evan, what are you doing out of bed? You shouldn’t be up here right now”
“I’ll come down if you do, but what you're doing is wrong. You have a secret place just above our place and what you do in there is beyond me, but from what I can tell it seems you drink in there right?” Buck pauses for a second looking at his Dad incredulously but continues before his Dad can cut him off. “Then your doing drugs that you shouldn’t even be using anymore and drugs and alcohol don’t mix Dad, we learned that from one of your ‘safety speeches’ but I guess bullshit to those right?”
“Don’t you cuss at me Evan, I am your father”
“You're not much of one right now considering I’m the one that’s going to drag you off of this roof and back home. You were a good Dad, a great Dad even before you hurt yourself at work and now look at you” Buck steps closer to his Dad who doesn’t move away from the edge. “Dad come on, let’s go back inside” Buck gets closer but his Dad is still staring over the edge. “Dad come-”
