Summary
TK swoons when he discovers a sentimental scrapbook full of notes he and Carlos have left for each other – but he also finds a book of poems that closeted teen-Carlos wrote about his struggles, including a few dedicated to his high school crush. An adorably mortified Carlos recalls the stir he caused when he was published anonymously in the high school paper, and everything he went through to write his wedding vows for TK years later. With TK as a hype-man, maybe Carlos can embrace his creative side again.
“The third time we hooked up, I asked if you wanted tea and cookies. You looked at me like I was so weird.”
TK’s exhausted face breaks into a dazzling grin. “You were being such a Boy Scout.”
“Then you said yes and ate half the cookie jar.”
“You called me the Cookie Monster.”
“That was the first time I really made you laugh.”
“Tea came out my nose.”
“It was beautiful.” Carlos pauses then to qualify: “Your laugh.”
TK gazes up at him. “I can’t believe you remember that.”
“The first time you made me laugh was when we were dancing at the honky-tonk.”
“Hey!” TK swats his arm. “I was trying my best!”
“You were so goofy,” Carlos chides. “I just loved it. I loved you.” -

Summary
"The worst pain in the world is losing someone you love.
The second worst pain in the world? Watching the person you love lose someone, and being all too familiar with the feeling. Knowing that every second, every breath feels like walking through hell and back with a hundred-pound weight on their shoulders, and not being able to do a damn thing about it.
Pain is familiar to TK. Hard to feel, easy to understand – pain is knowing just how much Carlos is hurting.
Fear is recognizing that his hurt is different."
-
TK knows what it's like to lose someone. He's been exactly where Carlos is now, but standing on the sidelines of grief proves to be harder than he could have ever imagined.
Or, 5 moments before the wedding and 1 moment after.

Summary
“No llores, nieto,” Carlos’ abuelo tells him during the wake of his abuela's funeral.
His abuelo crouches down, his joints cracking and popping as he stoops to Carlos’ eye level. He raises a calloused thumb and wipes away the tears that are still falling from Carlos’ wide brown eyes.
“Men like us,” His abuelo continues, his words casting a wide net. “We don’t let the world pity us, we can’t let them see us as soft.”
Carlos nods, wiping away any new tears that are starting to fall. The right sleeve of his charcoal gray suit now comes away colored a staunch black where Carlos’ tears have dampened it.
For some reason, the way his abuelo says ‘soft’ ricochets off of Carlos, as if it were stone and Carlos is a thin sheet of glass nestled into a window pane. It’s left a dent, an imprint, an impression, but hasn’t done enough damage to cause a crack.
Carlos’ bloodshot eyes shine with hesitation as he asks, voice small and insecure, “Reyes men don’t cry?
“Reyes men don’t cry,” His abuelo confirms.

Summary
There are still so many words left unsaid, things that Carlos knows he needs to say, and now it’s too late. Issues that needed to be resolved, feelings that needed to be hashed out, and trauma that needed to be talked about. They were all words that always got stuck in his throat and couldn’t get past the years of expectations of being a proper man and not coming off as “too soft.” Words that he’s never going to be able to tell his father now. The good and the bad are still locked up inside of Carlos. He’s not sure if they’ll ever find their way out.

Summary
As much as TK wishes they could, they can’t collapse back into bed together and spend the rest of the day in each other’s arms with tears on their faces. They have to attend a service with hundreds of strangers, they have to put on their dress uniforms and stand at attention as Gabriel is lowered into the ground. If he lets TK hug him and kiss him and empathize with him, Carlos won’t be able to keep it together, and he doesn’t have time to break apart. They have to go. TK understands it. That doesn’t make it hurt any less, when Carlos grabs his hat and leaves the room without a glance or another word.
An expansion of the ending scene of 4x17 and the opening scene of 4x18.
