Summary
In this day and age, it should take eight hours max to cross the country, preferably in business class. But the vagaries of departmental funding should not be underestimated, and Kamet has little choice but to rely on the kindness of strangers, and he may technically be a fugitive. So he doesn’t have much of a choice.

Summary
"Wait," interrupted the Attolian. "How did they get the oil?"
"No one knows," I said. I explained that the tablet in the temple of Anet was broken and there were no copies of it. No one was sure how Immakuk got the bottle of oil from Death, what bargain he made. "When people tell the story or they put on the play of Immakuk and the gray lands, they make up different ways Immakuk might have tricked Death or different promises he might have made. Or they skip that part."

Summary
I interrupted him. “I am hardly saving your life right now.”
“You are sitting beside me. In the dark. And you’re telling me a story. That does sound very life-saving to me.”
“I am not telling you a story.”
“Oh,” he shifted so that his head was almost resting on my shoulder, “but you will. You always have.”In which Kamet tells a story about Immakuk and Ennikar that leads to some interesting developments.
Set after Thick as Thieves and before/during the events of Return of the Thief. Spoilers for all books, probably.

Summary
Greatly wise cloaked in wisdom was Immakuk
Greatly strong clothed in strength was his true friend Ennikar
Great was their love and greatly did it sustain them in their journeys together- Translation from the first tablet
Immakuk and Ennikar, Relius and Teleus, Kamet and Costis; this is a story of great wisdom, great strength, and great love (and of course a certain amount of idiocy) throughout the ages.

Summary
Nienna, Goddess of Pity and of Comfort to the Dead, finds herself in the uncomfortable position of picking a side.
--
Nienna does have the occasional living disciple, though they are few and far between. She makes the occasional appearance in stories of the underworld centred around others, and often they come to learn her names this way. There is no organized religion for her, no tenets of belief, no holy days or traditional practices. Those who pray to her do so on their own and must devise their own methods to do so. At any given time, she might have a few dozen people who pray to her, under a myriad of names.
Relius, for better or worse, is one of them.

Summary
Costis had seen many people with little to no use for gods. They simply lived their lives. But among the guard, and among Attolia's soldiers, there were very few who had not spent the kind of moment when all you could do was pray. Prayer was important to soldiers.
And more than most, Costis knew enough not to discount the words of a god, even a god he had only just learned of.
