    Summary

Greta looks back at it on the wall, really looks at it. It’s a fifty years later, her eyes shimmer in the tears she no longer tries to hide from Carson. Her shoulder pinches as she reaches up to touch it.

Carson knows her thoughts, “you’re even more beautiful now, my love.”

    Summary

Greta advances at her own risk.

When the umpire calls an infield fly, which an infielder could catch with ordinary effort, the batter is out and all force plays are removed, even if the fielder deliberately drops the ball. The rule exists to prevent the defense from executing a double play or triple play by deliberately failing to catch the ball. In either case, the ball is live, and the runners may advance on the play, at their own risk.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you directly without problems or pride; [...]
so close that your hand upon my chest is mine,
so close that your eyes close with my dreams.

    — From Sonnet XVII by Pablo Neruda, trans. Mark Eisner.

    Summary

“Friends can mean a lot of different things,” Greta says.

    “Like what things?” Carson asks.

“They can mean something like this,” Greta whispers, leaning in and gently placing her lips onto Carson’s.

What if Carson let Greta kiss her in the kitchen?

    Summary

“She’s not my girlfriend,” Greta hisses, even as she watches the game, watches Carson leading off second base, the focus in her jawline, the flex of her calves, that stupid cap on her head.

“Oh really?” Maybelle leans over Jess. “Then why are you drooling?”

Greta’s face goes hot. “I’m not fucking drooling!” she hisses. “Carson and I work together.”

“Yeah, I’m sure you do lots of things together,” Jess quips, proud of themself.

Swallowing hard, Greta steels her resolve. They’re getting too close to the truth. She has to remember the rules she and Carson drew up in the back of class once – they should have been taking notes, but Carson’s hand was on her knee, her thumb drawing circles, so she spent most of class just doing her best to keep a clear head.

“Really, Carson and I are just friends,” she says, firm. “She has a boyfriend.” And that part is true at least. Carson isn’t her girlfriend; that’s Greta’s entire problem.

(Or, a modern-take on the affair and how it might play out if they were allowed more choices, for better or for worse. The one where they're in college, they're co-workers, they can't keep their hands off each other they just really need to get their shit together.)

    Summary

She was Greta Gill. And she’d be damned if nothing was expected of her.

Maybe it was the pent-up aggravation from not getting the job she rightfully deserved in cosmetics. Maybe it was the knowledge that Carson hadn’t chosen to come with her to New York, or that Jo hadn’t dropped everything to move to California. Maybe it was that she’d never done anything purely for herself. Maybe it was because every man she had ever met irked her to the nth degree with his base, underestimating, sexist comments. Maybe it was because she knew she was charismatic. She was vivacious. She was entertaining. She was a goddamn Rockford Peach, and if she could make it into the first all female baseball league, Hollywood would be a piece of cake.

    or

the one where greta becomes a famous hollywood actress, and carson chases her lucky one.
