Javi didn’t have the ring in his pocket, but he compulsively dropped to one knee.
“Yuzu,” he said, but Yuzuru did not hear him. He was looking instead at a flock of birds overhead.
“Look, Javi!” he pointed. He turned and saw Javi kneeling in the dirt. “Oh, did you drop something?” he asked.
The moment was lost. Javier lied on the spot.
“My shoelace is untied,” he blurted out. He looked down and saw both of his shoelaces tied as tightly as when they had left the house.
“Um, okay,” Yuzuru said.
(Or, five times Javi tried to propose to Yuzuru, and one time Yuzuru took care of it himself.)
