Two years ago, the Institute was destroyed by the Sole Survivor and the Minutemen. After that the Brotherhood of Steel grew jealous and didn't want them controlling the Commonwealth. Back then they would just complain about the Minutemen being the ones to destroy the Institute and not them, but lately they've grown more ruthless. They've started attacking Minutemen patrols and harassing settlements, and there are rumors that they're planning to destroy the Minutemen and seize control of the Commonwealth.
Among the chaos stands Deacon. Agent of the Railroad, best friend of the Sole Survivor... and formally the Lone Wanderer.
After his wife Sarah Lyons was presumably killed in the Outcast incident seven years ago, he escaped to the Commonwealth, changed his face and joined the Railroad in their fight against the Institute. Then he met the Sole Survivor and everything changed, he had a friend again. But now his old friend Arthur Maxson is threatening to terrorize the place he now considers home, and he realizes that the wasteland still needs the Lone Wanderer. He needs to finish what he started.
He needs to become the Lone Wanderer again.

Okay so maaaybe James was missing a few SPECIAL traits. He wasn't exactly the strongest...but not the most weak mother fucker to walk the vault...and he lacked a charismatic nature, too. BUUUT - it wasn't like he couldn't handle a little hardship - hell, he had to LEARN to have endurance in his life...!
He had plenty of brainpower, too! And his perceptive nature tended to prove useful (and also hindering, pending the situation) in a pinch! Plus, he wasn't horrendously unlucky - even if he got thrown into the occasional problematic situations. Nah, not at all. But...god it felt like he was missing something drastic when he stumbled all over himself. Too bad he can't fit through tight spaces to save his life....
As a side note, it's probably a REALLY good thing Butch can fit into tight spaces.
