“Hmm I don’t like waiting very much”, he stated eying Elrond carefully, “but Disa always says I give great massages, for the head especially. Might get rid of that stress”
This took Elrond by surprise.
“I cannot ask you to do that Durin”, he protested although he longed for some physical comfort.
“Ye’re not asking, I’m offering”, Durin replied gruffly, “and now stop being so stubborn elf and lie down, already”
Or: After being banned from Khazad-dûm by Durin’s father, Elrond gets overwhelmed by all the stress he has been living with and needs to sit down. His head feels like it’s exploding with pain but fortunately Durin finds him and takes care of him. And maybe Durin can convince his friend that he should not blame himself for everything that has ever gone wrong in middle earth and that he is not a failure…

The unlikely friendship between an elf who often feels like he doesn't belong and a dwarf open to other cultures leads to a celebration of all the ways that they're different, as well as how much they have in common. In time, romantic feelings develop alongside their friendship, as they realise that what brings them together is far greater than what separates them.
Or, Elrond and Durin never part ways for long after their first meeting, and in between showing each other their culture and establishing relations between their people, they fall in love.
