    Summary

Note: Over 12 years after writing "In the Convent," my fanfic of James Joyce's "Araby," I finally wanted to write a sequel to my earlier story. It is set decades later. It's ekphrasis (detailed description of visual art in writing) that also interpolates Joyce's story and St. Teresa of Avila's writings.

Trigger warnings: sexual repression; lots of compulsory Catholicism and allo-, cis-, heteronormativity; sexual assault/abuse (all implied and ambiguous, not explicit, partly because of the repression). I also tried to address the Orientalist (racist and fetishizing) themes that the original uses.

    Summary

Joyce's nameless character of "Mangan's sister" from his story "Araby" is the object of the male narrator's adolescent infatuation. Here, I named her Siobhan and tried to imagine her voice, which is absent from Joyce's story. I attempted a feminist retelling to rectify a common criticism of Joyce's story. The James Joyce Quarterly, which does not usually publish fiction, rejected this story with generous feedback, which I appreciated. I wrote this as a 19-year-old college sophomore in spring 2009.

Father James Flynn appears in "The Sisters," the first short story in Dubliners by James Joyce. He has passed away and is laying in state in the room where he lived. We don't learn much about Fr. Flynn, so I have written this fanfict to describe the first 30 years or so of his life.
