Hiccup runs away before his final test where he will have to kill a dragon. He fly's on toothless for a long distance, all the way to the middle east. There he ends up with Altair's brotherhood and learns the ways of the assassin brotherhood while also utilizing his unique bond with Toothless. After five years he returns to the archipelago to hunt Basim, a traitor to the brotherhood, and he ends up back on Berk. There, he finds that Basim has hired Drago Bludvist and his lackies to help further his goals, expanding the Templars control. Hiccup has to use he knowledge of dragons and his skills as an assassin to eliminate and Basim.

Now that its just the two of them, they both end up learning how to survive alone together in the wildness and living surrounded by dragons his whole life makes hiccup lose connection with the human world. But then their life takes a turn for the worse when they are captured by a man who calls himself a dragon master, forced to work for him, hiccup leads and attack on a village which leaves him grounded when toothless breaks his wings. He discovers so many thing about this village and its people which change his life forever for good or for worse.

When Berk is attacked by dragons on an early morning, Hiccup attempts to shoot down what looks to be a Night Fury who was attacking alongside the raid, but while he did shoot it down and saw it go down to the forest, when he goes to find it, instead, he finds a Light Fury. And with his own decision, Hiccup let's the dragon go despite the chance he had after all the neglect he's felt his whole life. But when he finds her again near a grove, without a tailfin and in need of help, Hiccup decides to help it, and from there, they grow a bond unlike any other dragon and human has ever had before.

Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.
Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.
They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.
AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.
