He had shut the ink bottle in case his brother’s ire hurled out at the suggestion. But a beat of silence passed, then another. The log snapped in the fireplace, and Desha sighed.
“She doesn’t belong here, Despa,” was all he said. Somehow the most intolerably dejected resignation the eldest ever said. Despa scoffed.
“She’s adjusted here as well as any other human of the Underworld,” he shrugged. “You know sometimes she looks at you like you’re starlight? Heaven knows she is one, in a sense of heritage. And you like her just as bad—no one else will do for you at this rate.”
