Usually, it was to get them to sin, to drive them mad until they broke and committed some sort of atrocity that led them to hell upon their death. It was a cycle, but they despised their job.
Then, they were tasked with tempting Enid Sinclair. As soon as they saw her, their dead heart lurched. They would do anything to see such a beautiful wolf in hell.
Frankly, they didn't have to do much.

But when his Auntie Morticia got him in contact with the Drake couple, Janet being a member of the family, that spent their lives digging up dead things (archeologists), Tim was ecstatic to have the chance to stay in the notoriously crime-ridden city. Especially since the last time he was there he watched two circus performers fall to their deaths, though he has since been told that it actually wasn't planned and hadn't been for entertainment.
A few years later he is known as Red Robin, a vigilante that fights alongside Batman and his gang. They are for some reason under the impression that he has neglectful parents, but that couldn't be any further from the truth! He talks with them every family séance. Because they are dead. By choice, of course, they just prefer the Other Side over the Land of the Living!
