Summary
David Jacobs was not a particularly impulsive individual. He'd had the same best friend since the third grade (Jack Kelly), been in love with said best friend since freshman year, and was perfectly happy with pining silently until the day he died, so long as things remained the same. Senior year rolled around, and the aforementioned best friend got a girlfriend. New relationships toss David and Jack's relationship into turmoil, and David finds that the consequences of acting before thinking can be unfortunately extreme.

Davey’s pulling the coffee canister down from the upper shelf, his head tilted just so, and Jack stares. Stares because, beneath the strong curve of Davey’s jaw sits a bruise. A distinct, circular, purpling bruise, vividly dark against the column of his throat, almost bleeding color into the surrounding skin.
Jack’s mind sputters and stalls, the gears inside refusing to turn.
