Summary
The sight of Danny strung up and bloody appeared on the screen in front of the table and Steve had to swallow down a wave of bile. The pristine white shirt Steve had tossed him a mere couple hours ago was soaked with blood all around the collar and shoulders, and Danny’s face was already a mess of bruises and swelling. Steve wanted to scream, punch something, do anything to get Danny out of there and home safely. He’d burn the whole fucking city down if that’s what it took.
“Whatever she wants you to do Steve, don’t do it, okay? Don’t give her anything.” Danny’s voice was calm and steady, but it was clear to everyone that he was stressed and hurting.
“So, do we have a deal?” Mei asked, unphased. “Don’t make the same mistake you made with your father, Commander McGarrett. Don’t allow a loved one to die because of your stubbornness.”
Steve could feel the concerned stares of the entire team as her words rang out, and he had to clench his fists to hide their shaking. He wouldn’t make the same mistake again. He had more than enough blood on his hands, he couldn’t live with Danny’s too.

Summary
Like many of us, I was mad how Steve's departure was written and also about the reasons why he left. I wouldn't call my story a fix it, more a sequel to the series finale. Except in my version, there is no CR involved. This and some changes in general lead to the canon divergence. I am going to offer you a different point of view on why Steve left and why he stayed away for one and a half years. When Steve returns, he returns to Jersey because, during his absence, a lot of things have changed. Mainly in Danny's life but also in Steve's. This story deals with the aftermath of the finale (which is also slightly different from the OV). Enjoy the ride. There will be a lot to digest.

What if… there was an explanation for Steve’s sudden decision to leave the island? Something he couldn’t share with anyone, not even his best friend?

Whumptober Day 21 - Blood matted hair/bleeding through bandages
McDanno - a twist of the series finale where Steve finds Danny and decides to stay, only to have Daiyu Mei escape and hurt Danny again.
or
Steve wants to run, but can't because Danny needs him, and he needs Danny. Except for one day, Daiyu Mei escapes and tries to finish her revenge.
Danny pulls through, and Steve contemplates leaving but then he sees Danny fighting for breath, giddy that Steve was holding his hand. He decides to stay, like he decided to keep Daiyu Mei alive. He brings Danny home, parks him on the couch and mother hens him, just like Danny has done for him.
The blonde detective looks at Steve one day when they are sitting on the beach, sun on them. Despite his adamant rants, Danny loves Hawaii and its people as much as Steve does.
"You looked like you wanted to run," Danny says, eyes closed.

What if something happened to change the course of events in the Season 1 finale? Governor Jameson was not killed and Steve and Kono were not arrested? Steve McGarrett makes different choices and changes the fate of the entire Five-0 Task Force. Set in 2012, immediately after episode 1x23 and AU after this.
