Summary
Something happened along the way, neither of them knew what it was. But it led to a series of unfortunate events that tinted their idea of each other. Uncertainty became confusion that turned to tension which led to hate. They say hate is a big word, but for those two, hate was not big enough to describe what they felt for each other. At least that what they believed the other thought. As it turns out, assumptions also lead to misunderstanding. That was what their life became, a series of uncertain, confusing, misunderstandings that made them wary of each other.

Yuuri felt his face warm at what his mate just said. He tugged on the blanket and asked a question so softly spoken in the darkness that enveloped them. “If we hadn’t met as children... Do you think we would have met at all?”
Viktor contemplated his answer at the question. When he was ready, he reached out with a hand to caress Yuuri’s cheek. “We would. I would find you myself. I’d do everything, no matter how long it takes. But I know I would. Even if we met later in life, I know something inside me says that we’d still be together like this.” He could hear his mate’s breathe hitched in surprise.
“I would have done the same thing too...” Yuuri sincerely muttered. “You mean everything to me, Viktor.”

Summary
Hanahaki disease is a rare illness born from unrequited romantic love, in which the patient throws up and coughs out flower petals. The plant grows in the lungs, and eventually becomes deadly if not treated. The only true cure is if the love is returned or if it dies naturally. Alternatively, the plant can be removed through surgery, but the feelings and memories of love disappear along with the petals.
"At first, Yuuri thought it was just a cold. The persistent cough, the tightening in his chest -- that was nothing unusual; his colds normally lasted a while. It would go away sooner or later.
But a month later, the cough still showed no signs of letting up. Instead, Yuuri’s wheezing seemed to get worse with each passing week."[Note: updates are currently on hold as the author is rewriting previous chapters. A new and improved (and complete!) version will be coming... at some point. Probably by the time they release a second season heh.]

Drunk on champagne after his devastating loss at the Grand Prix Final in Sochi, Yuuri told Yuri that they should be friends. Instead he reached for his phone. It was 3 am. Normally he never checked his email this late, but this was important. His favorite fan fiction just got updated.

This student, however, had been sending his hands south for two semesters now. These solo sessions were getting bold too. No. Desperate. Moving from his home, to his private office on campus and now… he couldn’t get up from his desk before addressing this issue.
At least Yuuri was in his later evening class, with no need to clear out of the room for anyone else that night. These releases were sometimes louder than he’d like, but the building was usually empty at this time. So he allowed himself a moment to fist himself free of the tension, sometimes edging himself to thoughts of bending Yuuri over his desk, letting moans and whimpers out. Some breathy versions of Yuuri’s name were called out tonight as he came in his hand.
Things Victor knew about Yuuri: He was going to get him fired.
