Summary
In the course of a single day, John Brady receives the career-ending news that he is both intersex and four months pregnant in the middle of a war. As he increasingly leans on his Catholicism to cope with the horrors of his situation, profound isolation in an unfamiliar city, separation from the man he is in love with, and estrangement from his own body, John becomes more and more fixated on the story of the Virgin Mary and the idea of divinely ordained pregnancy until their identities begin to bleed together at the edges.

No mention of Muninn's imprisonment at the hands of the Trickster god, or Huginn's daring rescue. It seems, all has been erased from history. Until now...

It was fortunate they lived close enough to Conning Creek's guild of apothecaries for her to see a professional, because Osvald didn't know what he would have done if he'd been the one to see the baby coming feet-first. Even the intermediate apothecaries present hadn't been able to rotate Elena from the outside. It hadn't been easy for Osvald to watch a surgeon cut into Rita's abdomen to retrieve their child, but of course he knew how much harder and how much more painful it must have been for Rita. He longed to see his wife smile again, and, holding their newborn daughter and hearing his academic musings, she did.
