Shay tries to breathe, but all he feels is blood bubbling at his lips.
The feeling of blood dripping down his face brings a dim awareness of the strange warmth of the blood soaking his back and chest, the smell of iron and gunpowder hanging in the air.
There’s hands on his shoulders and his chest, folding his hands in, moving him onto a stretcher. The movement should hurt, but it’s just warmth against his freezing skin.
He’s carried somewhere. He opens his eyes to see the sails of the Morrigan above him, distant and doubling, tripling, quadrupling and framed with pink and blue and orange light.
The sails unfurl, and the ship starts moving slowly.

When the house was attacked by a bunch of gang members, pushing Barry onto the floor, breaking the dishes and terrifying Cassidy. Even when they were chased away, after receiving a beating from your wounded patient, the threats that they left behind crawled inside your head and burned fear into your heart. Cassidy believed that it would be the safest if you were to remain with them, but you thought otherwise. You had never considered yourself to be the bravest soul, and thus, you ran from the danger.

Shay returns to New York in February, 1777, just months after the great fire.
His mission is almost complete. He carries the precursor box, taken from Charles Dorian"s dead hands.
He should go straight to the Grand Master with this, but the weight of sixteen years, his home city in ruins under British occupation and fifty-six more victims on his conscience force him to take stock of his life....This is officially the most depressing story I ever wrote.
Also, it has no steamy stuff in it. Sorry.
