How Each of the Madrigals Got Their Gifts (Except Mirabel & Antonio) by Silver_Inspiration

Summary
An exploration of how each of the Madrigals first discovered their gifts.
Note: Mirabel and Antonio's ceremonies will not be included in this work, despite them actually being my favorite characters, because we know what happened at those and because I already covered Mirabel's in "How Each of the Madrigals Reacted to Mirabel's Failed Ceremony."
Brief depiction of Alma (at that time probably around age 30) examining her chest area, but due to injury. I do not claim to be an expert on burns by any means, so I do not guarantee that my depiction of their severity is at all accurate. Should you find yourself in a similar situation, please go to the ER -- according to a retired nurse I know, it is possible to be **severely** burned without realizing it.

Summary
This room was an exact match for her one at home, right down to the pattern on the tiles and the colour of the walls.
Alma wasn’t sure what to make of that yet.
One thing was for sure though: this strange, living house was trying to help her.
“Thank you,” she said quietly, unable to raise her voice. She swallowed heavily, her throat tight and her heart breaking.
The shutters waved slightly. The tiles danced and the wardrobe swayed. Alma was aware of a faint sense of welcome, love, sorrow, protection.
This house was not natural. Nothing about this night was natural. Pedro was dead, her babies would never know their father; so many of her friends and neighbours were gone forever. She didn’t know what happened to her parents. Everyone outside was expecting her to help them, to guide them.
And this house wanted to help her.
*
Alma Madrigal has just lost her husband and gained a miracle. She has a following of traumatised, injured people looking to her for guidance. They, and her babies, are relying on her strength.
But there's one among them all who offers help and comfort: her strange new sentient home.

Summary
When Bruno sat down on the top step, his back to his locked door and his hands under his chin, his eyes cast downwards on the second topmost as he tried to figure out how else he was going to get in, Dolores chose that time to make her way up the stairs and sit beside her distressed uncle.
"Tío, estás bien?"
Bruno shook his head, turning to Dolores. "No. I can't get my door open, sobrina. I couldn't all morning."
Or: Casita won’t let Bruno into his room. Not when he tries. Not even when the rest of the family tries.

'It should never have been your job to fix us. It should have been mine. And now…I let her down. She was there for me when I had no one else and I-I let her down.’
Mirabel looks up, dimly able through her fogged-up glasses to see tears running down the old woman’s nose. She realises for the first time that this is what they have in common. What they have always had in common. The others are grieving for their gifts, for the magic. Alma and Mirabel are grieving for Casita.
The Madrigal Family are starting to rebuild, but there are some things still to be said. One night, Mirabel and her Abuela talk about what they have in common, what they've lost, and how they move forward.
