Summary
To Casey, the world is an endless slog. There's always one more test to study for, one more grade to achieve, one more degree to covet, and one person she never wants to see again. At some point, the effort seems futile.
To Derek, the world never seems to right itself. The shows won't play themselves, but they're in little bitty bars that don't matter. He's got no feasible goals for the future, and there's no one there to force one onto him. Because the only person he wants to talk to won't talk to him.

“No, I’m still not buying it,” she decides. “You didn’t want me dating Ralph because I thought he was you at the time, which actually makes sense. But what would be so bad about me going out with Sam?”
This conversation is pulling on every one of Derek’s last nerves - and he didn’t have many still intact to begin with thanks to her. Taking it into his own hands - literally - he moves forward and goes to take her by her shoulders and start pushing her out of the room, but she ducks his grip and slides to the other side of the room. Derek groans in frustration for the millionth time.
“What, am I not good enough for your best friend?” she mocks scathingly. “Is he too out of my league? Or are you just worried that he’ll hang out with you less because he likes me more?”
“Bullseye,” Derek says through gritted teeth. “Now. Get. Out.”
