“It was a Kennedy operation, and everyone knows it. Nixon got to shake hands with Armstrong and give a nice speech on television, but it wasn't his victory. I hope that keeps him up at night.”

Summary
His lips were chapped and he tasted like cigarettes. He always did. Woodward was half convinced that, even if he somehow managed to quit smoking, his kisses would still taste like cigarettes. It was another thing that was slightly comforting. Not because he liked Bernstein smoking as much as he did, but because he liked Bernstein.

Summary
That was new. Bob Woodward smoking was not a sight he ever thought he would see. He never smoked. He was always criticizing Bernstein for how much he smoked—it was so unhealthy, and he should at least not do it indoors. For a while, he had tried to bar Bernstein from smoking anywhere inside his apartment, but that hadn’t lasted very long. Woodward hardly even drank more than a few drinks every so often. It wasn’t normal.

Summary
“We could wait to see if Segretti shows tomorrow. There wouldn’t be any harm in staying even if he didn’t,” Bernstein said, close enough to Woodward in the bed that he could see the other man’s chest rising and falling. He had propped himself up on his elbow and was staring down at Woodward’s face. “We aren’t expected back at work until Thursday. We could stay. The beach looks nice enough, and I think we deserve something of a break from work.”

Summary
“Yeah, really. I haven’t been to one of those things since the D.C. Printers Ball, and that was when I was about eighteen. We only stayed for about twenty minutes, anyway.” It was the sleep deprivation. Neither one of them was thinking very straight; as a rule, he didn’t really gush about his years at the Star, and Woodward seemed to be off in his own little world, thinking about the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Woodward must have been a little loopy from sleep deprivation, because the first words out of her mouth were, “Tell me something I don’t know about you.”

Summary
Woodward got the feeling that Bernstein already didn’t like her. She was so straight laced compared to the other woman, and, not to mention, she was the weaker writer of the two. Everything she brought over to Bernstein’s desk would promptly be snatched out of her neatly manicured hands, and Bernstein would read it over, and she would almost always make some rude comment about it.

Summary
Their way together has never been smooth, and though they both try to skirt around each other’s rougher edges, Bob has always enjoyed the rasp of Carl’s caustic tendencies against his own pride, leaving him scraped raw and vulnerable - like stubble burn on his thighs, prickly and uncomfortable and delicious. He doesn’t want Carl to be cruel, but…

Summary
Carl doesn’t want polite conversation, he doesn’t want to spend an hour dancing around the fact that they both just want to go back to his apartment, and he definitely doesn’t want to take her to breakfast the next morning. He wants something quick, something easy, something with no strings attached.
So, obviously, the only logical solution is a gay club.

Summary
“Can I suck your dick?”
It’s both unexpected and expected, and Carl both knows what to say and doesn’t. So he says nothing.
“You suggested it,” Bob says, which Carl can’t honestly deny. He didn’t mean the suggestion, but he made it.
Are you gay, he wants to ask. Are you crazy is probably the more important question.

Summary
“Do you give a shit?” For just a second Carl’s gaze, when he lifts red-rimmed, wide-pupiled eyes to meet Bob’s own, is defiant. He falters, mouth twisting into a rueful grimace. “Right. The story’s the important thing, I shouldn’t have -”
“Don’t put words in my mouth,” Bob says, still too sharp. “Of course I give a shit. You’re right, I shouldn’t care if you’re gay or you just go to gay bars for the conversation, but it’s but it’s you and I do care about your wellbeing. And it’s - it’s nice to know,” he adds, dry throat catching and choking.

Summary
The infuriating thing, Carl thought as he licked his wounds over by a side table serving as a holding place for discarded champagne glasses, was that crooked bowtie or not, Woodward looked good in a tux. No penguin comparisons for Bob Woodward, no; he wore the ridiculous get-up as easily as Carl imagined he had once worn his navy uniform. Carl wanted to tear it off him. Not all the way; just one sleeve, maybe. Just enough to disrupt that handsome, symmetrical silhouette and put Woodward as off-balance as Carl felt.
