Erik’s fingers traced Charles’s jaw, an unfamiliar texture catching him by surprise—rough, coarse, a new weight in the space between them. He lingered there, the unexpected rasp of the beard under his fingertips sending shivers up his arms, the texture so unlike the smoothness he remembered. This, the hardness, the new edge to Charles, it jarred him, electrified him. He was feeling someone both foreign and achingly familiar. Erik pressed his palm to it, feeling the heat beneath, a strange tenderness rising in him as their mouths met, both soft and sharp, both old and new, as if history was melting in that touch.

Since Charles had realized his gender and came out to Erik, the two of them hadn’t done too much. At least, not where their sexual lives were concerned. If Charles was honest, it was his fault but Erik wasn’t complaining, he had told Charles to take all the time he needed and decide what he was and wasn’t comfortable with.
Now though, Charles was beginning to realize he was ready and there were a few things he had realized he wanted to try. Apparently, things that were turning out to be impossible to bring up with Erik.
