He's trying to earn a spot in the FBI under Agent Crawford, but he's also responsible for his mother, who is a resident in a mental hospital after she had a mental breakdown more than twenty years ago. He never really knew her, but he's trying to do right by her anyhow.

He often found himself clinging to anything or anyone that could return even the slightest bit of sanity to him. He did so with Dr. Alana Bloom and now Dr. Hannibal Lecter. But instead of the peace he found with Alana, Will Graham found something much darker and much more dooming in his kiss with Hannibal. With one kiss, Will had locked himself in a deadly dance with his psychiatrist; one in which the melody was uncertain and unwritten.
Will did not know if the music or his dance partner would lead them to their deaths or a new life, but all he could do now was sway along with them.
