Summary
If Barney could live without sleep, he’d never close his eyes. It was impossible to get a good night’s sleep in the Resistance. Fighting against the Combine for days just to flop onto an old floor mattress wasn’t exactly a recipe for beauty sleep.
Unfortunately for him, his body’s biological need for sleep wasn’t going anywhere. Which is how he’s ended up with Alyx dragging his snoring corpse back to base.

Summary
“And what if I decline? What if I don’t want to follow your orders? I have a good life, Gordon and I just defeated the Combine and cut off all contact they had with their home-world after walking from one end of the country to the other, and we barely broke a sweat! What makes you think I want to do this, let alone anything else, for you?” Alyx spoke venomously.
The G-Man smirked.
“I’m afraid you don’t have a choice in the matter, Ms. Vance. You see, I was able to call off those... Combine friends of yours due to the... deal we made, years ago. To break this deal would simply let those creatures return. Think about my offer, Ms. Vance. For if you decline, those ‘could have’s’... will no longer be ‘could have’s’.”

Summary
“Are you ready?” Vance asked Gordon as DOG carefully wrapped a belt around her seat. She gently adjusted her makeshift helmet. Her eyes nervously stared into Gordon as he nodded. Looking around the claustrophobic space ship, she couldn’t help but feel uneasy. “I’m not sure what we’ll see up there.”
Gordon’s hands slowly signed a reassurance to her. He then turned, staring right ahead.
“You’ve never flown one of these before, have you?” Alyx questioned playfully as she watched D0G position himself closer to the controls. DOG responded with a mechanical whine. Letting out a soft laugh, Alyx listened as Kliener began counting down.
“Launching in five…four…three…two…one.”

Summary
The generation that came of age during the occupation of Earth by the Combine, colloquially known as ‘The Last Generation’, was a unique assembly of soldiers, survivors, and fighters. Their childhood nursery rhymes sang the legend of their liberator Gordon Freeman; their early education was in survival instead of literacy. To a human who had not spent their childhood in warfare, they were borderline incomprehensible.
To Gordon Freeman, their college professor, they were a headache.
In which Gordon Freeman teaches community college, Alyx Vance has her great coming of age story, and Barney Calhoun pines like extinct vegetation. And in which everybody grows older, but nobody grows up.
