“I’ve never been convinced that there has been a case of true demonic possession once the Problem started,” Lucy continued as if Lockwood hadn’t even spoken. “A colleague of mine, George Karim, has dedicated his dissertation to this, and he’s come to the same conclusion I have in the field. Any so-called ‘demonic’ manifestations are simply Visitor-related, end of story. A priest with no Talent is just as useful as any other adult.” She took a biscuit and leaned back in her chair, seemingly satisfied with herself.
Lockwood scoffed despite himself. “And they said you were a Catholic, Miss Carlyle. Tell me, when was the last time you attended Mass?”
She stilled. “I fail to see how that is any of your business, Father Lockwood.” Her voice took on a steely tone. “I met the requirements the Archdiocese set, and I was personally asked by Archbishop Blake to take on this case. But if you do really want to know, it’s been over a decade, which I’m sure you noticed since you were staring at me the entire Mass.”
