Summary
There is something very practical about Arwen’s ancient and much-powerful grandmother (for an Elf, anyway) that Arwen admires, for she herself has sometimes found it difficult to achieve practicality. Estel, Man though he is, appreciates her fancies very much. He and his poet’s soul. She has spent the last twenty years sharing them with him in her letters, and every response (growing fewer and fewer until these last six months they stopped entirely) has him writing back like one offered water in the desert.
Arwen does not mind; it is not as though she herself has much more sense, climbing into bed with him as she does.

Faramir and then Galadriel seek to comfort Arwen, after she and Aragorn suffer the loss of something-that-might-have-been, and as Arwen learns that becoming a mother can require daring to drink from a well of sorrows again and again. Galadriel shares the story of a loss of her own, and of how Arwen's father Elrond - her nephew, protégé, and friend - had helped her to move past it.

Galadriel watches Arwen’s fingers brush the surface of the water. Flames dance along her fingers and creep up her arm. Arwen calmly lifts a handful of the flames with her other hand. The sky is very dark above her, and the flames run up her arm and into her hair. They do not burn her. (Could anything burn her?)
‘Are you afraid?’ Galadriel asks even though she knows the answer.
‘No,’ says Arwen. ‘My father has flames too. Sometimes he is water. Sometimes he is wind. Once he was stone, and he didn’t have a heartbeat. I wasn’t afraid then.’
