Summary
In 1525, Lenhardt Müller shot Peter Gertner, almost escaping with the accused murderer of Otto Zimmerman, only to get burned in the Mill by the mob that had formed at the time. The brothers of Kiersau Abbey are freed by Andreas Maler, the Druckers, and a few of the skilled townsfolk before things escalate further, peacefully explaining away the chaos. Nothing else burned that eventful evening, except for the souls of everyone present.
Years later in 1543, a wealthy, widowed, and childless Andreas Maler returns to Tassing, ending up once again solving another murder, this time of his dear friend Claus Drucker. With Magdalene Druckeryn, the last of her family, the two agree to work together to find the killer and bring the man to justice.

Tactile intimacy is a foreign thing, to Father Gernot. He has never touched another man, save for brushing fingers with the brothers when distributing the Eucharist into their reverent palms. Or as a child, grazing shoulders with the other boys that knelt with him in the church pews.
Now, his fingertips slide down Andreas' nape, finding every groove in the landscape of his skin. His fingers trace over a skittering pulse-point. He feels tendons flexing and caverns of heat where the veins loop like rope just beneath the surface.

He was about to meet Andreas Maler – the Andreas Maler!
He had been so excited- that- that he just couldn’t wait! He couldn’t possibly wait until spring to come and see Master Maler, to meet the man who had painted that beautiful altarpiece in Salzburg. The Holy Mother seemed to glow, lit from within with her rosy cheeks and soft, flaxen hair! And the smiling baby Jesus – it felt to Caspar that the Christ-child so rarely looked like his mother, like someone’s child, the way he looked like his father and mother combined. The altarpiece was so gentle, and warm – Master Maler had to be gentle and warm like that. There was no way he was anything else. No one cruel or rough would be able to paint that delicate baby and that rosy-cheeked woman.

When the man returns -- to the town, and from the dead -- gossip travels even faster. Tassing has changed in the years since, and Andreas has changed too. But the people who missed and mourned him know the look of a person in need -- as do those who never knew the man whose stories and smiles have since been replaced by a deep melancholy.
And Tassing takes care of her own.
