Summary
When Amber Gris, a simple guardsman for the kingdom Parrish, is tasked to be the personal guard of the heir to the kingdom, the Hand of Devotion, she was not expecting to find a family or dethrone a Vessel. She also didn't expect to find a familiar face under an unfamiliar name.
To be honest, she didn't know what she expected, but it wasn't any of that.

Summary
After getting their ship wedged inside a deep undersea trench during their latest cataclysmic mission, devoid of any real escape or rescue transmissions, the crew of the Coriolis find themselves trapped within the throes of an ‘extended sleepover where we all die of starvation at the end’, as their captain so elegantly puts it.
As the days pass beneath the insurmountable weight of the Ethersea, as their supplies dwindle and any hope of escaping the trench wanes, Amber, Devo and Zoox talk about their feelings, argue, confess their fears, share stories, and just learn a whole lot more about each other in general, which goes just about as well as you’d expect.

Summary
After nearly biting it during the Abyssal Auction, all Amber really wants is some peace, quiet and a juice pouch. Unfortunately, the juice pouches are on the bridge, where Devo is sailing the Coriolis back to Founders' Wake. Amber's not the only one with a lot on their mind.

"'I've heard just about all outta you that I need to know, thank you,' Amber quickly responds as Orlean nods, and heads out the door.
'Yeah, yeah, yep. Sorry, Amber,' He can barely feel himself saying."
Expanding on this scene, because I can. (And I desperately need to see the Devo La Main tag get above 50.)

"Devo reached for all the anger and resentment he had been holding since he had first heard Brother Seldom’s broadcasts on his tonewheel. It was perhaps the first real emotion he had been able to feel during his life with the Benevolent Parish."

Summary
Drowning isn't something you forget. It sticks to you, like wet clothes, like unwanted prayers.
_Her hair is long, thick, and salt wavy. Amber is nineteen, and already her arms are strong and her hands calloused. The sea is all around her and there is no up and no down. Her lungs burn. A moment passes, maybe two, then a hand on her shoulder. A bright light shines through the darkness and someone is screaming. Devo is screaming, she realizes, a sickening sound and visual this far underwater. Devo, who shouldn’t be here, who shouldn’t even be alive yet.
_Devo isn’t sure who his prayers reach. For all the church teaches, “God” is still something as mythical as oak trees and bright sunshine. He exists, he’s sure of it, but he isn’t sure how or when or why or… or anything. He does know that he’s done something terribly wrong though. Something blasphemous, something sinful, but he doesn’t know what.
God doesn’t answer.

Summary
It’s really easy to hold onto anger. Trust him, Devo knows anger well. It’s a tangible feeling, something he can grab and feel. It can be consuming, in some ways relieving, but it can also be biased. Something Devo has not learned is that anger is a secondary emotion, it springs from another feeling, until the original incentive is long forgotten. And while this can do something to assuage the original pain, it does not help you overcome it.

Summary
Sound carries on the Coriolis. That means that the nightly cacophony of deep-sea droning, Urchin scuttling through the walls, and the steady trickle of fresh ethersea water through the pipes to Zoox's tub are inescapable. It also means that when someone on the ship needs help, the sound of their distress does not go unnoticed or unanswered.

Summary
His footing feels unsteady, his heart unrested. Somewhere, closer than he’d like, Orlean is near.
He needs to be here, ready to pilot them away if Orlean does anything. And he knows that this is a ridiculous notion, there is nothing that Orlean could do to them without it being detrimental to himself, but this does nothing to ease his worries. Devo feels the need to be, if he cannot be in control, in a constant state of observance.
