    Summary

It's hard to keep track of time in the Oletus Asylum. Ever since Aesop Carl went from respected doctor to disbelieved patient overnight, time stretches on farther than it seems.

It doesn't matter. He'll keep his patients safe regardless of how the asylum views him. Nothing will stand in their way to freedom.

    ... Not even Joseph.

    (Joseph... Please, let me go...)

    Summary

He’s never been very popular, but is this all really necessary? Three, no, four. Four of his coworkers are holding Aesop down. His arms twist violently and uncomfortably behind his back. Why is nobody listening to him? Why are they confiscating all of his things? Did they say a patient escaped? Everything overwhelms him, his thoughts race in and out of his head. His whole body hurts, and the hands travel everywhere. So many dirty people, patting him down. He hasn’t done anything wrong. So, why? Why is this happening?

Aesop, dear, why did you ever leave your room?

    Summary

"And what happens then, huh!?" Margaretha seethed behind her grimace. "What happens once you've been bitten and you're gone, leaving me alone with these bozos?" Mike only laughed, rubbing a coarse thumb across the wet streaks that stained his friend's face.

"Then I die." The words should have felt like searing white pain, instead Margaretha found herself easing into her companion. "Preferably listening to one of your sweet melodies before I go out."

The dancer gave a sharp breath, holding the air as if she'd collapse right there. "You're stupid, you know that?"

He only sighed, a familial sort of love lacing his words. "I love you too, Mags."

    Summary

At last, the seer relented and gingerly tugged the embalmer’s crooked hands away from his head, holding them in a grasp that grew looser every time he prompted the latter to even out his breathing-enough for Aesop to easily pull his hands out of with a small utterance of thanks to the other. He turned his gaze to the ground, and felt inviting warmth beside him, a scintillating scent like how he had always imagined mystical, faerie-filled forest glens to be; lavenders and violets sleeping in the depths. Swaying plants, medicinal herbs cold under the glow of the moonlight.

    Heliotrope.

Faint, bare, but it was there and he thought it was lovely; unique.

(He shouldn’t be thinking those things.)
