“ Angelo had picked up smoking young. He hadn’t planned to, his father had actually detested the habit, but maybe that was exactly why he’d started. He had picked up his first cigarette less than a month after his father was killed. However, he found that the urge only gripped him when he was thinking about his vengeance. Ever since he had received that letter, he carried a pack with him everywhere he went.
Cigarettes were harder to come by in recent weeks. Being on the road with Nero, all their money had to go towards gas and food. Cigarettes were a luxury, and so both Angelo and Nero had to be frugal.
At first it had been hard to cut back on smokes. Every time he looked at Nero across the passenger seat his fingers itched to light up. It would be so easy to end the bastard out here, alone with him like this, and he could come up with any story he wanted to cover his tracks. It was so tempting, sometimes it felt like his need for vengeance would consume him, but Angelo was nothing if not patient. If he got rid of Nero now, he would never get to the don. Yes, Nero Vanetti was still of use to him, so Angelo would allow him to live a little longer.”
This and the first time Angelo turns down a cigarette.

(Post-canon: Nero is hesitant to end Angelo's life and leaves him by his side. Together they start life in Florida with a clean slate).

With his muse in perfect view, he began decorating the sheet with light sketches that served as his guidelines.
Nero soon found himself interested in this new distraction more than he had been the entire time he was filling out paperwork — and he wasn't sure if he was referring to sketching or something else.
When Nero was younger, he picked up an interest in drawing, and became damn good at it too. He'd take any opportunity to pull out a small sketchbook and pencil and waste the day away drawing everything and anything.
He would've continued if it weren't for his hobby being heavily discouraged by his father once he reached his teens, when Vincent began preferring his eldest son wield a gun as opposed to a pencil.

"Can I help you?" The tattoo artist's voice was smooth and low, like velvet."Uh," Nero said impressively. The other man stared at him and when Nero still didn't seem to find his voice, the artist smirked a little ruefully and chuckled.
"Fine, come in. I don't usually take walk ins, but if you're that nervous, I doubt you'd come back," he said with amusement.
"Er, I'm not here for a tattoo," Nero said, scratching his chin. The artist stopped retrieving his tools and looked at Nero curiously.
"Chickening out already?"
Nero scowled sharply. "I'm not chickening out at all. I didn't come in here for a tattoo."

He felt a deep sense of trust and betrayal all at once, sharp and bitter on the back of his tongue, with an unsettling yearning beneath it all. The man blinked and cocked his head a little. The fading sunset glinted in his eyes, gold and fire, and he frowned as if he was just as confused as Nero felt. “Is something wrong?”

Nero threw his head back and laughed, a full-belly laugh that broke through the quiet music drifting in the breeze. In spite of himself, Angelo couldn’t help the tension that eased just a little bit in his shoulders with Nero’s rambunctious laughter. The dark thoughts that had plagued him through the night, hanging over him like a heavy storm cloud, seemed to slip away from him like water off a duck’s back. In the soft moonlight with Nero, stupid, arrogant, naive Nero with his foolish smile and his unrestrained laughter the world felt lighter. Kinder. All of the sudden Angelo felt that he really could be a man named Avilio Bruno with no past and no future, standing upon a moonlit balcony with good alcohol and the groove of a jazz band to his back, with company by his side. For a moment, Angelo looked at Nero’s face and didn’t feel despair for the man he would have to destroy, but a foolish, kindling hope that perhaps, just maybe, he could remain by Nero’s side. It didn’t have to be forever. Even just this one moment would be enough.
