It's cold. So cold that it seeps into her bones, burns her lungs to breathe. Cold, cold, cold. Cold like she deserves. Cold to make up for all that's her fault.
It's so cold.
The powdered snow melts at her body heat, just a little. The cold water soaks her red hoodie, steals more of the warmth from her muscles, zaps her little remaining strength.
She freezes.

"Only if you press on it," she says softly, and Xisuma makes a noise of understanding. The probing fingers on her cheek retreats, and she forces herself to relax.
She's safe, she's safe. He isn't going to hurt her. Gem's right there. She won't let him hurt her. She's warm, and she's safe.

"I'm... Not sure that's the best course of action," she admits, though she refuses to call her own tone sheepish. Gem snorts, another eye roll accompanying it.
"What, for you? Or for Pearl?"
"Both."
"Figures," Gem says, and she takes a step away from them. "Look, if you're just here to soothe your own consciousness because you think I'm gonna tell you it's all rainbows and dandelions, don't bother."
"I'm not!" They surprise themself with how much truth is in those two words, and how hard they grip their arms to keep them crossed instead of doing anything else with them. "Gem, I care about her. I just want to make sure she's okay."

"Gem?" Pearl weakly calls, as Gem tries to get up from the tangled mess of blankets atop her bed.
It makes her stop. The meeting can wait a moment longer.
"I'm here, Pearl," Gem soothes as she looks back to where Pearl has nestled herself. She's still mostly asleep, clinging to one of Gem's pillows. Her face is half buried in it, revealing only her eyes as she struggles to stay awake.

"That's all that matters. We're in this together now, ya know? Both of us."
It's all that matters.

"I'm a zombie," is all she says as a response, and buries her head back into her arms.

"So how was Double Life?" she asks, because this is a game they're playing, even if Scott doesn't know it. "I heard you were tied to Pearl."
Scott makes a face at her question, all that previous joy gone in a second.
His nose wrinkles, just a little. Like he's been faced with something rotten, a zombie corpse left in the sun too long. It's as if the bitterness of her own faux sweet words have ran across his tongue, leaving him tasting nothing but her acid.
But as quick as it appears, it's gone.
