“This is the twentieth time you’ve asked to take this test,” She pressed. She stubbed the lit end out on the corner of Kabru’s sheets, right beside his name written in swooping cursive. Intelligent. Refined. Mentally well. “Many officers after experiencing similar situations may find it prudent to take more time off.”
I take ownership of my mistakes and work to rectify them.

Summary
“Captain,” Kabru greeted despite having spent the better part of an hour in the car with the man. They hadn’t exchanged a word– Kabru was the one who spoke and Mithrun remained on his phone, tapping away “Any thoughts?”
Mithrun’s gaze slid over Kabru, unreadable. Mithrun wasn’t going to make this easy. He waited, silent and expectant, as though he’d already figured it out but wanted to see what Kabru might say. Typical. Seeing if Kabru was worth his salt.
Kabru crouched by the body, his eyes sweeping over the man again as he checked the ends of the man’s jeans and work boots. “Looks like suicide, sure, but something’s… off.”

Summary
Mithrun huffed, shoving his hands into his pockets, his gaze flickering with a hint of impatience. “They called us out for this?”
Kabru bit the inside of his cheek as Mithrun shook his head. “We are done here.”
The officer beside them took a step back, face drawn in at Mithrun’s voice– low, tense, barely masking his frustration. However, that movement set the man off. Mithrun abruptly shifted on his feet, staring a hole into the larger man like a wolf sizing up a rabbit.
Kabru cleared his throat, stepping closer to Mithrun. His hand curled around the agent’s smaller arm, and he ducked down to his ear. "Mithrun, I know this doesn’t fit the profile we’re tracking, but it’s still a child."

Summary
He glanced to the side to see Kabru sitting in a chair, peering in at the process with a blank expression, eyes glued on the scene in front of him. One of his hands was resting in the air above his lap as the scientist worked, as though he might touch the bone shards and manipulate them himself, but he never quite did. He looked almost... detached. He hadn’t noticed Mithrun yet, and his posture—slightly hunched—told Mithrun all he needed to know. Kabru was too absorbed in his thoughts to pay attention to the world around him. He truly was hopeless.
Mithrun lingered by the door for a moment, watching his partner. He could hear the faint hum of the fan in the other room, the cold air leaking in here regardless, and the sound of a muffled speaker being used by the anthropologist, but it was Kabru who held his attention.
“Is this a bad time?” Mithrun finally asked, his voice cutting through the silence. Kabru startled slightly, turning his head to see Mithrun standing in the doorway.

The whole ‘getting grilled’ thing isn’t fun. But I’m not gonna pretend I don’t understand what you’re going through." He gave a casual shrug, as if to say, I’ve been there. Trust me. I walk in your shoes. "Look, I’ve been doing this for a long time. People make mistakes. Big ones. But what really matters is what happens next, you know?"

Kabru’s smile softened, his fingers brushing against the wet stone as he pushed himself to his feet. He took a few slow steps toward the rock wall they climbed. He pawed at the rock to catch her attention
“You won’t miss,” he said, confidence oozing in his tone. “You saw me do it, and I’m fine. You just have to trust me.”
Rin looked at him, searching his face for any sign of doubt, but there was none. Just that invincible, child-like belief that all would end fine.

Sure, Kabru did complain and chastise him for affecting their work, both on and off the field, or criticize his harsh words toward his character, but it was nothing Mithrun could actively write for his final report. All he could really say was cares too much.
But since Kabru never entered the break room, he was missing a golden opportunity to break another piece of valuable protocol, and Mithrun would not stand for it.
