Summary
Tommy was horrendously sick on the ship back to England. He’d played it off as a little seasickness, or the awfully fresh bread the French girls were given him which he’d not been accustomed to in the trenches and the tunnels where you’d be lucky to find anything other than a rat. In reality, he was sick to his stomach with the thought of returning home.
To what? To his family? He hadn’t seen them in so long, he’d almost convinced himself they weren’t real. Were they ever? Was he ever in England?

Summary
Even in the brightness of day, he feels like he never really dug himself out of the tunnels that collapsed around him.
He knows they’re not real, that the shovels that exist even when he’s awake are no longer real, that the nightmares that plague him are just memories. But they were real. And they are so vivid that it doesn’t take long each night for Tommy to imagine he never came home from France, that this life ‘after’ has all been some twisted dream, and he’s only just now waking up to the reality that he’s still there, underground.

Summary
Today you’ll get through the motions, okay? As much as your grief will allow.” Her voice is soft in contrast to how she’d been speaking to him recently with the kind of bitter tone that had taken over since his return from America. She speaks to him now like she’s his big sister, looking after her kid brother after a nightmare. It’s what he’d done to her after their mother died. Looked after her. But they were kids back then, dealing with a loss greater than anything they’d experienced. And Polly. Polly had looked after the lot of them.
Polly would be really helpful right about now.
