Summary
“Would you trust me?” Ed asked with a chuckle.
“Trust the guy who said red velvet was just chocolate cake with red food coloring…hey!” Stede protested, putting his arms up in self defense when Ed lobbed a balled up towel at him.
“You’ll never let me live that down,” Ed said with a mournful sigh. “Doomed before we even start.”
“Never,” Stede agreed, then, as if it had taken a moment to process, he added, “start what?”
“A beautiful friendship,” Ed replied with a dismissive hand wave. “The next great love affair, who knows? Sadly, it’s too late to find out.”
“Ah.” Stede fell silent while Ed carefully added cream cheese a little at a time. “The next great love affair, huh?”

Summary
“Are you alright?” Ed asked finally, his tone careful as if Stede was a bird about to take flight.
“I just needed to breathe.”
Strong hands were on Stede’s shoulders and he gasped. He hadn’t heard Ed move, but here he was with his hands on Stede, sucking all of the air out of the room. “So breathe,” he whispered, his own breath hot against Stede’s cheek.
“I can’t.”
“Why?” Ed’s hands tightened, like he was trying to turn Stede, and Stede resisted.
“I can’t breathe when I’m looking at you,” Stede replied through his teeth.
“Why?” Ed asked again, his touch more urgent, and Stede let himself be turned, stepped into Ed’s space, and watched his eyes widen as he backed him into his desk. There was a rattle when Ed’s backside hit it as an empty jar of ink rolled onto its side.
“Because.” Stede’s control was fraying and ready to snap, and the soft whimper that slipped past Ed’s lips when Stede lifted his hand to brush a stray hair away from Ed’s face pushed him to the brink. “You make it impossible.”
“Why?” Ed asked again, just a breathy syllable, his eyes locked on Stede’s and his lips parted.
“Because I want you,” Stede growled.
