Summary
Normally the main fight at the Olympics is to see who gets first.
But ever since Simon took the swimming world by a storm during the Rio Olympics in 2020, it's not been a question of who would get first, but who would join the Venezuelan swimmer and his equally accomplished Swedish rival on the podium in third.
Gold and silver belonged to Wille and Simon. Everyone else could only hope to fight for bronze.

Summary
Ever since Simon had pulled Wille out of the water during the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and subsequently revealed that his biggest rival was also his husband, the swimming world had been holding its breath for the next time the Venezuelan and Swedish swimmers would take their marks in the same race.
All Wille could think of, though, was how he felt like he could barely breathe at all.
Would it still be true that gold and silver belonged to Wille and Simon, or was the podium due for a change? Was everyone else still fighting for bronze?
____
It's just water.
He'd repeated it to himself so many times he knew he should have believed it by now, but as his fingers drifted aimlessly, sending ripples across the surface of the pool, Wille struggled to breathe. It's just water. Just stupid water. He'd practically lived in it, fallen in love in it... but then he'd almost died in it, and now, staring at the navy tile of the lane line, he couldn't bring himself to lower his body into the pool.
