Summary
"Remember when I said you're free to get off at any island you want?" Newgate asks.
"Yeah." A nod. "I don't want to stay on this one, though."
No, Newgate didn't think he would. What he's seen of this crafty, audacious boy with his greedy curiosity tells him that more than anything Marco's an impudent little pirate, and pirates belong on the sea.

Summary
Beck's jaw clenches, and he bites his lip like he wishes he'd kept that cigarette in his mouth. Shanks should have been aware of a visitor on board, conscious or not, and his disorientation strikes at some of his first mate's worst nightmares. "Marco the Phoenix wanted to say hi," he tells him instead.
"Huh-- Marco?" Shanks tries to sit up, but he aborts the movement about halfway, flinching as the gesture pulls at the bandages wrapped over his chest and the remainder of his arm. "Marco's here?" he asks, trying to sound enthusiastic, but Marco can hear the strain in his voice and see the cold sweat reflecting what little light comes through his drawn curtains. His chest heaves with the effort of breathing. "You should've told me, I would've gone up to meet him."

Summary
"You look," Marco said, once lunch was over and Beckman was up on deck in a cloud of tobacco smoke, "like you could use a drink."
"Oh," the cloud said, "what gave me away?"

Summary
After Ace agreed to join the crew, after the Spade Pirates were officially disbanded, Deuce properly became a part of the first division and Marco began to train him in earnest. Most of it was practical knowledge that he drilled into the younger doctor, which quickly led Deuce to the conclusion that rather than commanding respect through his competence and wisdom and strength, Marco was actually waging psychological warfare on his crewmates and subordinates.

Summary
Marco had an expression on that radiated frustration. Not uncommon for him, but rarely directed at his father. "You said once," he answered slowly, "that you'd never ask more of me than I've already given you."
"And I meant it," Newgate assured him.
"Everything I've done since then has been of my own volition. I offered it freely." Marco's shoulders slumped in resignation. "But now you're asking me to watch you die."

Summary
"I thought," Shanks said, stomping up the hill past curious children as they trooped back to their village, "you wanted to rest! I thought I'd find you napping in a hammock with a book on your face, a little pot of tea next to you like the old man you are--"
"Hey, Redhead." Marco watched him, head tilted to the side. He stood in a small patch of sun at the crest of his hill, a tiny sliver where the light still reached in the late afternoon.

Summary
Sphinx's weather this time of year was usually balmy and cool, according to all the reports Sabo had read about the place. It wasn't a difficult cluster of islands to find nor reach, its largest landmass topped with a huge mountain and a smattering of smaller islands all around it. The currents were mild, natural resources were abundant, with a population consisting mostly of children and the elderly. It would, under any other circumstances, be ripe for exploitation by the World Government.
Sabo hopped off their boat with a crate in his arms and splashed through the ankle-deep water to shore, Koala on his heels with a bouquet of flowers.

Summary
Law has heard much of the Whitebeard Pirates' medical operation, when they were still active: a huge, streamlined machine with Marco the Phoenix at its beating heart. Some of the best hospitals in the New World were located on Whitebeard-claimed islands, all of them referring to the Moby Dick's blueprint for infrastructure and logistics. He's not surprised to find the Phoenix in the triage area, patiently giving instruction to a young medic, but he is thrown off at the sight of the man elbows-deep in a dead body.

Summary
The first time Marco properly met Izou, they were both fifteen; Izou was clinging to Oden's back, screaming his lungs out. Very soon after that he was thrashing in Marco's talons, still screaming his lungs out and desperate to return to his lord's side as the Moby Dick pitched over the falls out of Wano and Marco dove after it.

Summary
There was, Beckman had noticed recently, somewhat of a trend of seconds in command outliving their commanders. It's to be expected; men like Roger, Newgate, and Oden burned so brightly and so furiously that they'd burn themselves right out, leaving all witnesses in awe of their power and conviction.

Summary
"We're reinstating the Pirate-Ninja-Samurai-Mink Alliance for the purposes of the Davy Back Fight," Marco said, launching straight into the rules as he set Chopper down. He had such a shit-eating grin on, eyes gleaming as he met Shanks's gaze. "As such, I'll be participating on behalf of the Straw-Hat Pirates, captained by Monkey D. Luffy."
Shanks knew his face was doing something stupid, as all his officers began to snicker, but he couldn't help it.
